Ordered a pre-built from overclockers about 2 months ago. I've always had trouble with the onboard sounds Realtek HD audio manager. I've read that many others have had trouble with this onboard sound and yes before anyone asks the drivers are up to date.

The microphone input was very very quiet and to gain a resonable output volume I have to use microphone boost and higher up all the settings. Now the microphone was working fine but has recently had problems. It would unexplanably cut out and I'd have to replug in the Jack however all of these times the jack has been securely plugged in. Now I cannot get any sound to come out of my headset (Medusa Stereo). Any ideas??

Longshot but do you use any apps that mess around with the volume controls? Vista has a nasty habit of allowing them to take-control.

I'm probably going to do that.

Will the cheapest of sound cards have working mic ports that are easy to set-up? Also I'm guessing the quality will be a step-up from onboard sound.

I'm not sure about that actually, I could be wrong but I seem to remember the cheaper Audigy cards having issues running 5.1 sound with a microphone (not enough jacks or channels or something?).

You'd need to ask for a recommendation in the sound-forum.

I dont have a five speaker set-up I just want to use the mic on my headset without hardware/ software creating a big fuss and being difficult to use, will the cheapest sound cards be able to do this? With onboard or above sound quality?

Make a post in the sound forum asking for advice, listing what you need from the new sound card (reference this thread if you want).

A second-user Audigy 2 ZS like AtaRo suggested should also be fine.

I had an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum, definately a good bit of kit, sold it once i got my IP35 Pro though as it does everything i need. Obviously its not as comprehensive as the Audigy, but has enough features to keep me happy. Also, the Audigy couldnt output 5.1 through optical which was a big flaw in my opinion. But other than that it was a fantastic bit of kit. You can usually get them for around £50 second hand, but tbh, for your requirements, i would say its an overkill. If you simply want to use the mic, your better off with a cheaper card.

i have the same mobo, the onboard soundcard is bloody awful !

Jaxon I installed myself a Soundblaster Audigy soundcard today however when in the bios turning off the onboard sound I noticed two settings:

7:1 surround sound and AC97. I'm guessing AC97 is the old realtek onboard sound found on a lot of PC's maybe you should try enabling this?

One of the ports on the back of my Ip35 actually broke and I had to buy another soundcard for audio

Looks like a known problem

there should be options for AC97 & HD - the pinouts are different though so make sure that you select the right 1 for your cable.
