Commuter car for <£1k

I'm driving my other halfs 1.4 T reg Zetec fiesta on an 80 mile round trip and it's perfect

No its not. It might be 'acceptable' or 'good enough' but it's not perfect, is it? I suspect you'd ended up convincing yourself its perfect because you cant see another choice.

How is a 1.4 litre Supermini 'perfect' for doing more than 20k a year?

I did 92 miles a day for a few months and without the 5 to do it in I'd have gone bonkers, frankly. What a totally crap start to your day.

I think he seems to be settling on the 1.25 fiesta, since it's the only one that isn't french or a vauxhall

To be fair tho, you have set yourself very high standards, Ive driven all sorts for many many miles and I cant think of any thing that has driven me bonkers, even the poxy Meriva I had:p

1K is dodgy car territory, if you are handy with cars then its great, but for those who are incapable then its not the best idea imo, even jap cars break, my Primera wasnt particularly reliable.

Id be looking at the 306, Ive had my mates HDI for a week, and tbh, its still great looking car and handles really well,Id still have it over a MK1 focus.

you've obviously never driven a corsa ;)

I had two days in a Meriva when I was doing 40 miles a day and it was horrid :p

Driving a long way to work sucks, end of. It's wasted time, its annoying, and its frankly rubbish. Therefore you need to make it as relaxing as possible.

Doing 80 miles a day in a Fiesta 1.4 is not relaxing as possible, at all. It's horrid. I cannot imagine anything I'd less rather do.

The only thing that made it bearable for me was being able to flick the cruise on, tune the radio, and relax in a comfortable car that cruises effortlessly.

There are many cars like this for £1k.

Don't agree, you can pick up a very good car for 1k provided you buy a good un, our S plate primera is now on 152k and has basically had 0 things go wrong with it from new, i'd be more than happy to go out and find a 98 - 00 primera for less than 1k and have total faith in it.

But, Mark, we both know that you'd also be happy getting down and dirty with it with the spanners if needs be. This give you slightly less concern, and slightly more faith in anything (even a primera that is inherantly reliable anyway).

Other than the sump (gasket was it?) needing replacing, that primera of your Dad's has certainly stood the test of time!

Obviously you should always strive for betterment, but what im saying is doing 80 mile a day in Fezza or the like, isnt as 'horrid' or 'bonkers' as you say, well not for everybody.Dullness, doesnt equal crap.

Maybe its because ive driven worse, hence a Fiesta isnt all bad:p Ive also been doing a lot of miles for a fair few years, and ive come to realise, the drudgery of a commute, is a drudgery in any car,all I need is a decent stereo!

Firestar, Ive had a few Primera 96 and 99 models, they werent inherently bad, but I did have problems, alternators, suspension links etc, nothing major.

The only uber reliable car i have ever had was a Toyota Carina E, it was also the most mind numbingly boring car ive ever had:p

It's not the dullness - doing 80 miles a day in anything, even in an S Class, is hardly massively thrilling.

It's more... why bother? Whats the point? There are many cheaper better cars than a Fiesta for this job.

Having done extensive comuting (200 miles a day at one point) in a 1.2l Corsa Merit I can confirm it is doable but I will add that it's much nicer in the mondeo Cruise for the win every time.
