i am running coretemp here and my q6600 goes from 3194 down to 2129 every 2-3 secs and up again.cpuz also reports the lower speed (multi on 6x instead of 9x basically)

what can i do?

Intel Speedstep, reduces the multiplier when idle and raises when stressed.

If want to disable you will need to disable EIST & C1E in the BIOS.

basically it speeds up when it needs to (saving power when it's running slower)

there's no performance hit

Can this be stickied by a mod please? If it stays at the top of the CPU section we may stop getting questions about Speedstep! No offense to the OP of this post or any other post, as there is no obvious answer to this Speedstep "problem", but if we had this thread with a clear title at the top of the forum it could be pretty handy!
