Saudi cleric favours one-eyed veil

I don't really know how those women think... but if I assumed that they hate the way that they're treated on the basis that a Western woman would hate it, I'd be projecting our values onto a foreign culture, where they cease to apply. See where I'm coming from?

I can and I still disagree. If I where brought up in a cage I would want to know whats beyond that and eventually I would get out.

Its happening now in Iran, Women are starting to wear western clothes and let their headscarf's down, the religious police losing the battle. Check YouTube.

I'm rather drunk so I'm off to bed :D

From my point of view it's clearly a Good Thing if they're embracing Western values of their own accord... I just don't think we have the right to enforce those values ourselves.

Goodnight :D

In my opinion countries that are led by religious despots have been held back for years, Saudi arabia, laws from the dark ages, only survives because it benefits the american oil companies. While the saudi people are forced to live under strict islamic law their glorious leaders are living it up in london, new york etc, gambling boozing and other debauchery, call themselves devout muslims, bunch of hypocrites.

So before declaring us shining beacons of morality for the rest of the world to worship whilst loathing their backward selves, pick an example that stands up and sweep all the other crap under that bulging carpet you're walking around on.

I've not declared us 'shining beacons' of anything. Nor have I said everything we do is right. There are plenty of rather pathetic things we do as well. These are also wrong.

I've merely said that repressing women in this way is apalling and unacceptable. Which it is, no matter how you try and excuse it. It isn't about us and them, it isn't about forcing our values on them, its that treating women as second class citizens and arresting them for showing their face is disgusting and apalling behaviour and anyone who tries to justify it by saying 'Its just their culture' is being really rather ridiculous.

To be fair since the first Iraq war women's rights have moved on, for example women are now allowed to walk in front of men although this has been attributed to landmines by some people.

It's all totally fine, how dare we criticise their cultural norms.

Killing women for being raped is fine as well.

I was joking.

Being serious though what can you do, you have a group of people who interpret a book of fiction as they see fit and then decided everyone must live according the their views.

Nobody is justifying it. You have a very strong view on something and you're loathe to actually understand anyone elses. This is fine, but it doesn't really make it a discussion.

Can you explain what exactly Iraq has to do with this. If you want to talk about Iraq then you should know that Iraq was very liberal before the occupation/liberation/war and now is far more strict than it ever was due to crazy factions taking power and making up rules as they go along. This can be seen in the use of the niqab over their - numbers have shot up hugely since the American's paid them a visit. Before the Iraq War only old women really wore it now most do. So to claim that the Iraq war has had anything, but a negative impact on the lives of Iraqi women is just wrong.

Can you explain to me how anyone could possibly view this as an interpretation of any book of Islam? To me this guy has pulled this out of thin air for reasons unknown - certainly they're not religious reasons.

Why are these guys so scared of women, or scared that men can't control themselves??

Seems to me that 95% of the male western population can control themselves enough when talking to women without getting the horn or plunging themselves into an orgy. The remaining 5% - some are locked up, some should be locked up.

I like this country thank you very much - and I like that I can have a chat to a woman, by ourselves without people witch-hunting or gossiping (too much!).

Things like this from other countries always seem strange (and it does) but I usually try to think that it's just how they are and what they see as normal.

There are probably two women sitting topless in a jungle somewhere saying:

"you know in england, you can't just walk around topless like this you know"

"ha ha, why??"

"well, errm you just can't! You would get locked up!"

"locked up!! but why?? What about the men? can they walk around topless?"

"Oh yeah men can! It's just women that arn't allowed to"
