So I found out Friday that I was successful in my application for a job, I will be doing a lot of commuting, its 15miles away, so thats 30 miles a day. I know that might be tiny compared to some people, but I consider it a lot!

The job has a pretty good salary, but my main advantage is that Im still living at home, so I dont have much outgoings, apart from a little rent to the rents etc lol!

I have an old 1.2 clio at the moment, which Ive been driving for almost 4 years. Its not bad, but I wouldnt mind something that goes a bit if you put my foot down!

I would want my uppermost limit to spend to be about 8k.

Things I have considered are:

Oldish Audi A3 1.9
Fiesta ST

Basically a hot(ish) hatch, but that does have a relatively good mpg, running costs etc.

So any recommendations? Anyone with an ST that could comment on running costs?
Also, please bear in mind that Im 21, I do have 3yrs NCB, but that will be 4 in january.

That was something I had considereed too, but I already have a clio, I know its nothing like the 182, but its a clio none-the-less.

I would also choose a type r over a 182 too.

How on earth is 15 miles a long commute :p
Is that even classed as a commute hehe.

7200 miles is nothing :P

You're in Cooper S money ish you'd be looking at the pre facelift one though...

I was doing exactly the same distance got myself an E46. Might be a good choice?

EDIT : I've since read the first post and realised you're after a hot hatch, maybe not then :p

Don't buy a £8k~ Cooper S.

ww.cliosport.net <- Register, and browse.

Clio 182 for that money, or even a 172 with some change for a some nice mods... such as throttle bodies ¬_¬

Yeh I think a BMW would be a bit out of my range.

If anyone has a 182, type r, or fiesta (or even a focus!) ST, could they comment on their running costs etc. The one off cost for the car is not a problem, but I have little experience with the running costs of 'sports' cars.

Tom, it doesnt HAVE to be a hot hatch, but I thought that would be the best price:performance option.

I would imagine they are all roughly the same to run.

Clios can get 40mpg on a run, CTR - about 12 because you will be wanting to hit VTECH all the time to get some extra torks as for the fiest, well - common as muck, and not as quick as the other two. However, they do get 40mpg aswell.

As for serviceing, all similar.

You could get a 330i Sport comfortably for that budget.

230BHP 6.5s to 60?

Whilst giving you a lot more comfort than any of the aforementioned cars could. ;)

172's are bargain basement now as well so that would be a good choice and they're fairly economical for what they are!

Focus ST does about 25 miles to the gallon, I get about 250 miles for £50 of fuel
