Advice please - Audi A3 3.2

I'd be tempted to look for the 2.0Tfsi personally (which i have) as it is the best engine for performance / economy (6.8 0-62 and 35mpg combined) Remap can be had for £300 which will take it to 260~ bhp. and about 6s to 62.

In reality that engine never hits 35mpg combined though unless grandad is driving it. My wife drove our A3 2.0TFSI Quatro most of the time with me driving it hard once or twice a week and it averaged 24mpg(her driving now gets 49mpg out of her deisel golf). Its a superb engine but it isnt efficient and Audi seem to have added a sixth gear but made it even shorter than 5th in a lot of other cars, meaning even cruising becomes expensive with such sort gearing. The 3.2 is even worse as its a much older engine than the 3.2 in the A4.

But it's a 4 cylinder engine :(

I average about 30mpg and i don't hang about, i try to take it easy but it's all too easy to floor it, so i'd say thats with mixed driving so i'd dare say that 35 is possible, the quattro is a thirstier car than the DSG version which apparently gets 31ish mpg, it's also a tiny bit slower too, taking 7.2 to 60, but you have the advantage of 4wd so it's give a little take a little.

And your point is? a 6 pot might be a little more refined than a 4 cylinder engine, but does that matter in a car the size of a focus, it's not a motorway cruiser like the BMW 6 pots, i'm perfectly happy with the refinement of my car, it's quiet when i drive normally, then it makes a nice noise when i put my foot down. I don't think theres any dispute either on how good the 2.0 TFSi engine in the Audi / VW golf GTi actually is.

so what is it? I'd put the A3 2.0 TFSi in the same league as a golf GTi, sharing most of the same bits, engine, gearbox and chassis, are you saying the golf GTi is not a hot hatch?

What's the advantage of a 6 pot over a 4 pot then if it's not refinement, as the 3.2 A3 isn't that much apart from the 2.0, 6.4 to 60 over the 6.8 of the 2.0, and fuel economy is also worse at a claimed 27mpg over the claimed 35mpg on the 2.0, so i'm failing to see your logic, other than the fact that the 3.2 has a V6 engine

I'd also add, i'm not trying to fool you, i know you're like a wikipedia for motors, so i realise you seem to know what your on about.

A 6 cylinder engine offers smoother power delivery, is more pleasing to listen to, is more flexible, and... bigger numbers are better, innit.

And no turbo lag.

so it's 6 and 2 threes really, what you lose in one respect, you gain in another, you get better fuel economy, the power delivery is nothing a remap can't handle, and besides, the power delivery seems fine on my 4 pot, the DSG box is awesome but that';s nothing to do with 6 vs 4 cylinders. Turbo lag i'd agree with though. I also don't disagree that a V6 is gegnerally a better set up than a 4 cylinder. I jus tthink in the case of the A3, the 2.0TFSi is the better choice than the 3.2 as the V6 is quite a disappointment in the A3 and brings none of the characteristics across from its sister car (Golf R32).

I bought a 3.2 quattro 18 months ago so I'm a bit shocked by the drop in value, thanks Gordon Brown. I'm very pleased with the torquey engine and grippy handling, so if you can find one for 8-9k it's a bargain. It is a thirsty beast as you would expect.

The 2.0 Fsi has very little turbo lag.

I can't help think you think a 4 cylinder is bad only due to e-peen

It was certainly noticeable when I drove the Golf GTI back to back with the R32, although whether it was turbo lag, boost threshold or whatever I dunno. Foot down, not much happened, wayhay Turbo, off we go yay.

You bet
