I'm currently experiencing a new problem that never really happened to me before, so I am completely clueless. I've tried to search for solution/similar posts regarding to this problem on this forum or google but had no avail, therefore it left me with no choice but to start a thread regarding USB mouse causing BSOD when plugged in.

I own a Dell XPS 1710M gaming laptop (Core2Duo 2Ghz, 2GB Mem) running Windows XP, SP3 which is now 2 years old and the problem started recently. Basically whenever I plug in a mouse, whether it is a wireless one or a standard microsoft optic mouse, it takes me straight to BSOD. A simple test also showed that the 3G mobile broadband dongle also will cause a BSOD. However, memory stick are working completely fine. (non-executable memory)

I've tried to boot my pc up with the USB mouse plugged in, it took me to the window's loading screen then BSOD happened after the loading screen is done. I've tried to boot up in safe mode, which ends in same fate as before. Also BSOD will happen if I try to plug-in the mouse in whilst in safe mode.

I've got a total of 6 USB ports on my laptop, all of them are getting the same reaction. I've uninstalled many potiential softwares and checked device manager(no error suggested in device manager) but had no clue what I can do from there.

Any input from you guys would be great

My dads 939 desktop machine does exactly the same thing with any USB device including his phone, tomtom, usb stick. Only thing that dosent casue issue is his printer. A card reader is ok but as soon as you insert a card it BSOD's

We tried everything, new mobo, new RAM, fresh install of windows, tested the USB stuff on my machine and it all works fine. The only thing we havent changed is the CPU and optical/hard drives.

To this day we havent found a cure but im convinced its a software problem and im thinking he has a virus on one of his data drives ( cant be on his windows drive as its been formatted )

If the problem still exists even after he formatted his pc then that's quite damn evil
