Hi.

I'm wondering what pasta is healthy? Or is it all unhealthy?

The pasta I have is in a big bag, its like twirls and its ingredient is Durum Wheat Semolina, is that healthy or unhealthy? I love pasta and was thinking of having it with chicken Kiev and stir fry veggys.

I am trying to eat more healthy now compared to the past, like yesterday I had a great big plate of pasta with a whole jar of tikka sauce, it tasted good but I think it was on par with Mcdonalds food in terms of been unhealthy.

It's more what sauce/igredients you have with the pasta that makes it healthy/unhealthy. eg carbonnara is full of cream so has a lot of calories in it, plain tomato sauce has very little in it other than tomatoes

But wholemeal pasta is better than the processed stuff, shame it tastes so bad. Fresh pasta is best IMO

tikka sauce with pasta??? that sounds bad taste wise and health wise

There's no such thing as "healthy food" and "unhealthy food". It's all about balance.

Pasta is full of carbohydrates - so if you want to lose weight eat less of it, and exercise more. If you want to gain weight eat more of it.

willhub, can i suggest a cookery course or, at least buy a cookery book, becaseu

a) tikka sauce and pasta is not renown as a classic combination.
b) pesto with edam chesse in an omelette, i can kinda see it working but again its not a classic combination.

please dont let this discourage you from experimenting though.

edit:

also pasta and pesto yumm

and buy soem decent cheese, edam its vile

See I'd eat pasta all the time but I love cycling and want to get better and I cant see Pasta helping me when its gonna make me put weight on, I don't want to gain more weight, but I loooooove pasta :(

If you're exercising a lot, then pasta will help you. It is full of carbs, which release slow energy due to the time it takes to break them down into the component sugars. It will only make you fat if you aren't exercising, and to be honest if you aren't exercising anything will make you fat!

Don't eat it with cheese though, that will make you fat...

Actually, I disagree with two of the three things you said here.

White pasta is generally bleached/processed to give it it's colour, losing a lot of nutrients in the process. Wholegrain pasta will be a better option.

Balance is definately the way to go.

Carbs do not make you gain weight...well not directly. An excess of calories makes you gain weight. It's what you do with the excess of calories, a good amount of cardio and a good weightlifting plan will make the ratio of lean mass to fat gain greater. Sitting around eating an excess of calories will make you gain fat.

Yes, my post was a bit of a simplification I suppose. I still stand by there not being an "unhealthy" or "healthy" pasta. Perhaps a non-bleached variety contains more nutrients, but that doesn't automatically make it healthy. The entire diet needs to be looked at in context with the lifestyle.

I must be in the minority that thinks wholegrain pasta tastes miles nicer than normal pasta. With the big exception of spaghetti.

Fresh spaghetti is awesome.

The carbohydrates in wholemeal are far more complex, there are also, as long as you select the right brand, no additives, colourants or bleaches.
