Who's ditching current Quad s775 for Core i7?

I'm just interested who with a nicely clocked Quad on the s775 willl be selling up and going Nehalem?

I just sold my mobo and cpu ram combo ready...

Maybe I'm a bit crazy but s775 seems so old now....

Only really interested if people are going as soon as its available not people waiting 6 months for the price to settle:p

As soon as prices are reasonable and the bugs have been ironed out I will probably make the step to Nehalem. I'm guessing that will be sometime in Q1 09. In the meantime if I can pick up a cheap 45nm quad to replace my dog of a Q6600 (high VID, refuses to clock nicely beyond 3ghz), I would be a happy bunny :D

At the moment I won't be. Everything I've seen so far doesn't suggest that it's sufficiently faster than a good C2Q setup. I'm also waiting to see the power figures when overclocking as I would be running mine passively.

Hell I might even wait for the dual core versions next year if the hyperthreading implementation is good.

Well I've got a QX9650 o/c to 3.3Ghz so might sell it and go for the i7 940 depending on reviews - even then I won't rebuild my current rig till Christmas so hopefully prices will have come down a tad.

Not keen on the ram though - already have 4Gb (2x2Gb) so would look for 6Gb triple pack (3x2Gb) rather than 3x1Gb

I have a mildly overclocked Q6600, so it would be a big step up for me.

Having said that, three things need to happen:

1) The motheboards, at least, need to come down to a sensible price.
2) The DDR voltage issues, if there are indeed any, need to be properly sorted out
3) A comparison of "bang per buck" of a decently clocked s775 vs an i7 of similar cost. Unless it actually is an improvement, it's not really worth upgrading.

I'm hoping sometime around or after christmas :)

Just splashed out on a 780 board so my next upgrade will be an AM3 CPU

But my crunching rig is getting near end of life, so if performance/price hits the sweet spot, then I may well try the i7, will wait to see the benchies first

I think i am going to wait until i have a full on water rig and can comfortably use my q6600 at 3.6 + before i move onto the i7 and all it's expenses :P

i7 will be finding a place in my office but I will not be replacing the current rig I have due to needing it for other uses. However I feel that i7 will not really shine until Intels first revision of the CPU, a bit like when the A64 first came out and the 3200+ was so stubborn to OC then the Venice came and it all changed.

I expect to have a fully operation system with 2.66GHz CPU and 12GB RAM (Unsure of the benefits of lower latency DDR3 with i7 maybe someone can enlighten me) probably some mid level Corsair stuff. :)

Until it is properly released and tested to see what real life improvements we may get i think it is mad to consider binning perfectly good setups for something brand new with all the problems that may come from that. So far my little oc'd q9450 does everything i want nicely and i can't really see a justification for getting shot of it just because the new thing is here. If you can comfortably afford it and benchmarks are your life i guess maybe it might be worth it but for the vast majority i cannot see that it is worth it just yet.

I'll wait for the 32nm Westmere Octo-core inside Nehalem Skulltrail next year. So a miss for me. Happy with what I got, it does what I want it to do.:D

Ditto

Probably going water, hopefully get my Q6600 up to or near 4Ghz, won't consider i7 until a die shrinkage, and/or newer revision. Guessing a couple of years at least.

Not me, only just built my system. And I can't see the i7 being that much faster than my E8600 @ 4.3Ghz unless they clock really well.

If I can do the upgrade for ~£400, then yeah. That means new CPU, new motherboard, new RAM and new waterblock. At the moment at over £700 it's just not feasible.

well i sold my main rig (well one of them) so im gonna jump in ... at the shallow end based around the i7 920

edit: the boards seem pricey though

Not me, like Jokester I might wait for the dual core versions next year if the hyperthreading implementation is good.

But if your a hardware junkie, it just HAS to be done.

I would suggest that considering the economic situation, for most people who have a nicely clocked system, this might not be the most sensible move.

Mind you with the hardware not being available until the very end of the month there is plenty of time to thoroughily debate the subject.
