Just received an email:

Usage Allowance

Dear Customer,

This email is to advise you that last month you exceeded the usage allowance for your BT Total BB Option 1 service.

Your current monthly usage allowance is 10 GB.

Your total usage for last month was 20 GB.

Don't worry, we're not going to charge you for additional usage this month. However if you exceed the allowance next month, a charge of £0.60 for every extra GB you use will be added to your next bill.
If you'd like to avoid usage charges completely, you can always upgrade to BT Total Broadband Option 3, which offers unlimited usage* for just £24.99 a month. To upgrade, please go to http://www.bttotalbroadband.bt.com

For the latest information on our monthly usage allowances and charges, please see our Fair Usage Policy

Thank you for choosing BT Total Broadband.

Best wishes,

That's a 100% rise to what it used to be (30p per GB) and not a ****ing note did I receive to tell me.

Bt are as ever an absolute mickey mouse shambolic ISP.
They cap me at 512k every single day 5pm-12am.

Same happened to me. I called them up and asked them about it and they denied that they were doing any such thing. After a few phone calls I decided it wasn't worth the effort so I switched to adsl24. Best move I ever made :)

I still don't understand what people have against BT, they are a perfectly good ISP....fast 24h of the day for me. I don't care about phorm or whatever either.

If they limited your speeds every evening up to midnight, the time you are most likely to use your internet, then you would be annoyed with them too ;)

The speed cap, does it show in one of the speed testing sites or does it just feel slow ?
The reason I as is I get the same results testing any time of day but it seems sluggish in the evenings to use.

what exactly don't you understand? just because you get a great service 24 hours a day, doesn't mean everybody else does. do you really think people would be complaining if they were getting the same service as you?

It was slow using speed tests. I even sent screenshots to BT and they still refused to do anything :o It was obvious they were capping me as it happened at exactly the same time each evening..

It could also be contention at your exchange. Even if you moved to another adsl provider if the local exchange was under geared you might end up exactly the same. The system in the exchange could change to a alternate configuration at a set time to handle the increased use during the evenings or something.

If you had read my first reply in the thread you would see that I have switched to adsl24 and I haven't had any speed capping since :)

I'm still with BT but on a village exchange, maybe there aren't enough of us on to bother capping it, or more likely, as we can't get Freeview their vision thing isn't available & so doesn't need the bandwidth here !

I would understand definitely if that was occuring, Tiscali did that to me, but I would've thought if there was some "heavy user" limit or the like, I'd have been chucked into it already and been capped? Unless you need to download an idiotic amount to trigger capping.

I beg to differ & so does BT. Only some of it comes over ADSL, try applying for it from non Freeview covered area & see how far you get :D

 either way, you're lumped in with more than just the people on your exchange before BT Retail can do anything about it.
