Brake Pads and Discs

Hi,

I'm due to MOT my car this week.

The brake pads have worn a grove into the dics on all sides. I'm guesssing this will be a automatic fail for the MOT.

The car is a Astra SRI 2.0 1998.

What approximate price will I be looking at to get all the pads and discs changed?

Pads are like £65 for all corners? I think.

Disks, anywhere upto £150?

Depends if the tester deems it "excessive"

That seems quite expensive for pads?

A set of pads for my astra was £45, not had to replace the discs yet.

The grove is roughly 2mm deep.

Might get away with an advise. My ZX ones were ropey but it passed the brake test so he passed them and he's really fussy!!

Some things they don't really bother to check, but i doubt brakes will be among them

I doubt a 2mm groove will fail an MOT if the brakes are working, i'm sure I passed my last MOT with a groove bigger than that.

It passed the MOT with only a side light needing replacing

I don't think they really paid to much attention to the brakes. I was sure they would say it needed doing as they gave me advisory for "pitted discs" last year. However there was no mention of it this time...

I dont know anything about car parts, but can a brake disk be resurfaced? my dad works in a steel works place and they can smooth off a bit of metal, so basically in the case mentioned with 2mm. they would shave 2mm off the full disk to make it flat

is that possible ?

Yes but it won't work, discs have a minimum thickness before they need replacing.
