Buy CRT TV?

My 28" Toshiba CRT TV has died after 10 years of flawess picture quality and service.

I would really prefer to replace with a brand new CRT if possilbe as I still remain unimpressed by LCD TVs i've seen around friends and families houses. The colour quality and responsiveness of their screens doesn't seem a patch on my Toshiba.

So the question is does anyone know where I still buy a decent new CRT TV from? I've failed to identify any suppliers so far.

to be honest - I would say your friends and family have had poor quality TV's

You can get some brilliant looking LCD TV's with a rich deep colour, and great clarity, just that theyt tend to cost a bit more.

You pay for what you get, so to speak!

Just go look about, stores or read reviews on here.

LCD telly have come on leaps and bounds recently, i wouldn't trade my Panasonic Veria for much, its brilliant.

CRT are old technology :)

My Dad has a top of the range Panasonic that he got 1 year ago. I can notice blur on the image. My brother had a Sony and then switced to an LG last year. I can notice artifacts all over the picture and the colour has an awful orange tinge. My Mum has a Sony Bravia. the edges on any image seem somewhat fragmented to me. A friend has a Samsung the he brought 18 months ago, same issues.

I have yet to see an LCD that can handle fast moving images as crisply any CRT i've ever owned.

May be I'm just really fussy. But I don't like looking at the telly and thinking "that image doesn't look right". Which is what happens every time I watch any LCD.

I should also point out at this stage I'm not bothered by HD and think it will be a couple of years before LCD have progressed to truely handle a fast moving picture

If your wanting near Crt performance then i would go plasma. But i do have to agree with you my 32" panasonic Crt gave one of the best pictures i have ever seen. I too had many Lcd tv,s and was never immpressed with any of them thats why i went plasma, Its as close as your going to get.

If you want very good normal tv quality then forget LCD and go plasma. Plus most people are retarded when it comes to setting up their new LCDs and leave it in Dynamic mode also known as 'burn you goddamn eyes out with blockyness and fail'

For about 700 you can get the panasonic 42 PX 80 plasma which is as close to the quality of the toshiba you will come. And if you want to get even better then finding a 42inch pioneer kuro is the way to go, but these are rare now as they are discontinued and their latest only come in 50inch and 60. I have the 50inch 5090 and it spanks every CRT, LCD, and plasma out there, and so it should do at over 2k. Still the 42 panasonic PX80 is stunning value, just tell me what is your viewing distance from the tv, and the room dimensions ?

:D

I have fairly large lounge it's approx 12ft X 22ft the closest sofa is around 10ft from the TV.

The other reason why I wanted CRT though is because I dont have much of a budget (in fact I have no budget at the moment).

Plasma's seem less blocky, but after tweaking my Samsung lcd the source is more of a problem. For example, Harry Potter is on Sky at moment and the picture is fantastic...but other channels can be much blockier due to compression!

Having spent nearly an hour today giving the Panasonic TX-37LZD800 a thorough going over I no longer agree with the 'LCD can't handle fast motion, wide contrasts and blacks' argument, nor SD material either.

By far the best LCD picture quality from SD that I've seen on over 15 sets over the past month, was linked upto new BD35 player, BD material was amazing as was upscaled DVD, that V-Real Pro 3 engine certainly does the business ;) Think this is where my £ is going shortly, IQ much better than any of the Tosh, Samsung and Sony's even those upto £1.5k+, my own subjective opinion of course ;)

How much is that set ?

I and if you want something which will make you laugh at the quality of the panasonic LCD then a £1500 Pioneer 5080XD with 5yr warranty will do that. No better sets out there other than the latest Pioneer plasmas.

I spent a lot of time recently looking at panny LCDs for a friend, and although pretty good the 32 LG plasma he got was better. It does have some IR problems, but the panny LCDs do have a tendancy to let out some light bleed from the corners, not nice when watching dark footage in a dark room.

If you have around £600 then the 42 panny PX80 is the best choice by a country mile, fantasic set and unbeatable image quality for the price.

Ad, that Panny is £950 inc 5yrs warranty, has 4 x v1.3s, every processing engine etc that Panny do, 100Hz, it now wins the 37" award in 3 mags, and comes within a smidgeon of Pannys own PX80 for blacks/contrast according to the reviewers, i was hard pressed to tell the difference yest as it was next but one from a PX80 when watching 5 mins of Aliens in some dark scenes

Only prob I have is that I cant go above 37" which is a shame as it would give me more options, hence why Im keen on their flagship 37" LCD as its something I'll prob keep for 3+ years minimum

The Pioneer you mention above, is it full HD with 24p, sorry haven't time to google until tonight, will maybe check later, i know 1080p isnt the be all and end all but just curious

JESUS ******* CHRIST, £950 for a 37 LCD. The 42px80 plasma is around £600 and produces a better picture. Most processing things, noise reduction are crap and need to be turned off anyway, 100hz is an LCD trying to make up for the movement compared to a plasma. Plus as you have said it was hard to tell the difference between the 2, they were:

1. Probably setup wrong, actually they will have been setup wrong unless you changed the settings to something from the users threads on avforums to get a better demo picture.
2. £350.... £350 POUNDS :eek::eek::eek:

37 PX80 even cheaper so saving ~£400 which could go towards sky+, PS3, games, movies. The panny LCDs are very very overpriced compared to their plasma sets which are better.

It isn't Full HD, but produces a better picture than every 1080p LCD or plasma out there (except pioneer 1080p sets). It isn't all about pixels, it is to do with colour reproduction, greyscale, black and white levels (dynamic range) and the processing abilities. The pioneers also display 24fps content better than the other sets I have seen.

Don't want to sound harsh, but you would be a fool to buy that panny LCD at £950, and at the distance you will be sitting at 1080p is absolutely useless, you would need to be within 5ft to tell the difference, as our eyes cannot resolve that small a resolution.

I demod last years pioneer 720 vs 1080p 50 inch sets (508Xd vs 508LX), with both being fully ISF calibrated. It took me 10mins of casino royale and starship troopers on blu-ray before I could see the ever so slightly better definition from the 1080p set, and this was at 10ft and 5ft. My eyes are a bit crap but with contacts I have BETTER than 20/20 vision, and this demo literally opened my eyes to the 1080p con. The 1080p card really is an annoying one that manufacturers play, and I can only recommend a set with it if you sit close enough or will be using it as a PC/HTPC monitor.

Im always amazed by my bedroom Tv (a 15" CRT), the colours and motion are superb. Although saying thet in John Lewis they had PZ's pannys and the usual stuff and the 50 and 60" Pioneer 9G's.

All of them with football had blurring advertising board. Probably not helped by SD or the shop settings but still. CRT is just so clean in how it works.

You need to be careful when choosing. I still have a CRT, but know a lot of people who have LCDs and many of them are less than impressive!
