Govenment to spend £12 billion spying on our Email & Internet Browsing Habits

I didn't think they were really going through with this, totally pointless for any of the legitimate reasons they give, 12 billion to catch probably a handful of people a year if that, not to mention the obvious intrusions of privacy etc, pathetic.

Did you know they could give us fibre to the curb or home in most towns and citys for about that, not countryside mind but no they would prefer to waste it on equipment to spy on the public, its seriously messed up and everyone knows it but how is stuff like this allowed to continue? I think its time we put our collective foot down, i would change government to an open source style of democracy if i could, that would stop this sort of bs.

If they do go ahead with it i think its time we all start using encryption and ask web admins to provide https on their sites, it may not stop the spying but it will certainly make it harder for them.

"Boris isn't doing too bad a job as Mayor so I'm definitely more inclined to give the blues a chance this time around."
Not hard really :P Ken was extracting so much wizz with his almost as fast as he was extracting our hard earned money. Even if he does just as much damage he's better because he's funny and he's not bald.

Death to the internet police! What's so wrong with terrorists anways? They've created a lot more new Job vacancies in London than the last lot if imigration laws did :P
Not to mention got rid of a few of those inconsiderate No Swearing! that seem to populate the tube these days.

Recording the habits of people browsing and their email? Given the track record of government IT projects? How is that not something to worry about?

Can you give me a government IT project of that magnitude and budget that has actually worked? :P it'll probably cost us 50% more than the quoted 12bn and then be scrapped because it doesn't work.

Oyster and credit cards' widespread use is an indication of just how cashless we're becoming.

Yep, slowly but surely, people don't think these things can ever happen in this day and age but the signs say otherwise and if it creeps slow enough it will, i don't like to say it but its true that people need to wake up!

I've emailed my MP to check that he is doing the right thing and opposing such nonesense, if he is not I won't vote for him at the next election.

Very unlikely that the tories would implement this.

They have stated they will scrap the ID cards. They have stated they will scrap the Child Database.

Two firm commitments. I would suspect that they will make a third and not go ahead with this new database which if you work out the maths is impossible to create and store in this day and age.

Phorm isn't keyword based, it basically looks at everything you do and stores it for a time in a data centre outside of this country, then serves you adverts based on your complete browsing habits.
OK - looks like it might just be URL tracking then. That's still a pretty good indicator that the Govt. could use.

If phorm gathers data about your browsing habits and you browse a lot of porn, does that mean you will get lots of porn related ads? Following that to its logical conclusion, isn't that gonna make people that browse the really bad stuff grin a lot?? I totally hate the concept of Phorm and its contemporaries and will ditch my ISP in a flash if they introduce it. Will dephormation be a challenge to phorm though. Hope so.

I thought most ISP's monitor internet traffic anyway? Plus I would be very surprised if they don't already have a keyword system in place that monitors for dangerous words relating to national security etc.

I can understand spending 12 Billion of TAX PAYERS money to spy on people, because this will catch all the scum of the world including;

Terrorists
Peado's
E-Criminals

Except it wouldn't because they would just use encrytion...

The best solution is to use a proxy thus avoiding all government and isp monitoring, so you can browse in privacy.

You will laugh at this, but this is all to dow the coming energy wars.

All these silly little green taxes etc. And all the new terror laws and monitoring

Green taxes are just a way of lining their pockets. How is that to do with monitoring people's internet activity?

Also if its going on the two biggest networks - BT and vodafone. This will mean BT will lose even more customers.

But wait there, all they have to do is lower the price of their products and lo and behold, average joe whos is trying to save even more money will no doubt sign up.
