Hi,

Just looking at ordering a Saphire 4870x2. Ive read reviews, opinions - i can see that it looks like a beast of a card. I was wondering if people could reply with there own experiences based on these specific games as to how well they run. Don't worry about the hardware side of things, im just looking for game specific issues with this level of card.

I suppose what im looking for, is for any little technical glitches to come out of the wood work before i buy. As it's multi-core card, i don't want to discover that there's a hitching/jittering issue in any certain game i might play, go off to a forum and find a 40 page thread with people waiting for a fix/driver update etc.

I will be playing at 1900x1200 on Windows XP SP3. If there are any known issues with Vista, please mention them. Generally i just want to run the games at the highest possible settings.

So, these are the games i play regularly (i don't care if the card is overkill for a few of them - as i have other reasons for buying this card :)

Warhammer online
WOW
Lord of the Rings Online
Sins of the solar empire

Cheers

Sorry, this is not exactly what you were looking for but tbh those games are old school graphically, a 4870 would be adequate.

sigh.. I knew id get that post.

I know, and said i dont care if the card was overkill. I just want to know if they run ok. When im not trying out the very latest games, at the highest possible graphical settings with this card.. these will be the games i return to for now.

So i just want to know how they run and if there are any problems.

I'm going to get a bazillion flames for this but...

I've used both ATI and NV and the only brand that's given consistently trouble-free gaming has been NV. Whenever I've had ATI it's been a wait for the next set of drivers, then the next set, then the set after that and so on. ATI always say 'it'll be fixed/added in the next set'. Add CrossFire to the mix (which you'll be using on the X2) and you'll be waiting for profiles on newly released games. Most of the issues I've had are now fixed, but something to be mindful of. Many people say the 'The way its meant to be played' is basically NV paying off devs. Maybe they do, maybe they don't - but the point of the program is that a game with that badge will work trouble-free on an NV card. It may not run faster, it might not max out the graphical details - but it shouldn't have any graphical bugs.

The 4870X2 is the fastest without question - but its not 100% trouble free. NV have always been good to me. But there are plenty of people who say they've never had trouble with ATI.

Oh, no reported problems with those games on the X2.

The 4870 x2 seems fine on Xp for a couple of people I know that have one, they have reported no problems so far. Me and a work m8 on the other hand did have some driver issues on vista 64, but every game I play now works well with the new 8.10 beta drivers and am now happy with the card. I guess the only 100% way to find out is get one and try it.

I think what Gurusan is trying to say is that even if those games didn't run properly with both GPU's active, and you had to fallback to single GPU mode, all those games would run fine at 1920 x 1200.

Anyway, I don't think there are any problems with the games you have mentioned. The 4870X2 has been so popular that any common issues would have been reported on the 'net by now.

My own experience with Crossfire isn't great, a few years ago I bought a DFI Lanparty RDX200 with an X1900 mastercard and an X1900XT-X. That setup was the buggiest POS I've ever had. I couldn't get even a single run of 3DMark to run stably on it, and spent many nights trying to get it to work. Eventually, I lost my rag and binned the motherboard and ebayed the cards. The mastercard sold, but I never did find a buyer for the XTX. Obviously, the tech is now much more mature as you see nothing but praise for the 4870X2.

"How does the 4870x2 run these games for you.."

With ease :)

I brought the Sapphire version of the card about 3 weeks ago and its every bit as good as i hoped. Considering whether or not to get another one.

If you did get any problems in them games, disabling Catalyst AI in CCC turns the card into a regular 1GB 4870 so you needn't worry too much.

Boogle is completely right about the X2, i've been there, and waited and waited for new drivers to fix things.
Got rid of it and got a 280, highly OC'ed it and it's almost as fast as the X2 but with no problems.

Running WoW and Warhammer Online at 1900x1200 max details in Vista64. I can run WoW either full screen or windowed with no problems. Warhammer Online crashes occasionally when running in windowed mode. Fullscreen mode is fine. Using Catalyst 8.9

Jut upgraded from a 8800GT to 4870 (quite overclocked), not the x2.

WoW was maxed out on the 8800GT.
Warhammer was choppy on the 8800GT, is nice and smooth with the 4870.
I suspect Lotro is going to be a bit less demanding than Warhammer.

Both games are on 1680x1050 with maximum everything on. Not turned AA on in Warhammer yet, as I have to force it on in Catalyst.

Summary is, the 4870x2 will make short work of all these games, as the 4870 is easily sufficient unless you're talking enormous resolutions.
