Just got stung £22 for going overdrawn, iam quite gutted about this as its been my first time that Ive ever been overdrawn. It was my own fault as I moved some money into another higher savings account(still with the same bank tho)

Phoned them up, not sure why, as they couldn't help me over the phone. So what's the best way to try to get my money back?

Correct the error immediately you become aware of it, and then ask to speak to your account manager at the branch. If it's your first time and they accept it was a genuine mistake, and that you corrected it as soon as you were aware, then they'll often refund the money as a gesture of goodwill.

Done this myself - misjudged withdrawals to the tune of 37p. As soon as I was alerted to the problem I dumped £400 into the account to make it clear it was just an oversight.

^ Do this, it worked for me on my first time.... Not done it since

Write to the bank and contest it - they'll only respond seriously to letters.

They won't be able to refund you now though as they're stopping looking at claims until the 'test' case has finished going through the courts, unless of course your in financial difficulty (student/claiming/etc).

Sad but true, I've got 3 disputes with 3 separate banks on overdraft charges, all of no fault of my own. I got charged £25 by Halifax by going into an unauthorised overdraft due to a bounced cheque (twice, complicated). When they applied the charge it took my into my overdraft again (I don't use the account for anything but swapping money around and the occasional cheque). A few months later I'm -£120 odd as they keep charging me £25 every month for being in an unauthorised overdraft that they put me into. Screw them am I paying it!

We don't dispute enough in this country - other cultures even contest things like tax!

Oh and there's more advice and basic template letters on www.moneysavingexpert.com.

You cant but it sounds like your with Barclays, get it into th black within 5 days of youll get stung again and again untill you put it into 0.. they are ghey like that..

Ive left them now, i stayed witht hem 2 months, worst bank in the world.

Been with HSBC 6 years..

Go to the bank tomorrow and deposit enough to put you back into the black and then talk to a clerk claiming you had intended on depositing the money the previous day but "branch X" had closed earlier than the advertised time and therefore you couldn't deposit the money.

My gf has done this countless times and never had it disputed :)

I have always wondered. Why does the bank approve the transaction if you don't have sufficient funds? Surely its the bank's fault in the first place?

So you go into the red in your account when you are not allowed to.
It was entirely your own fault.
It wasn't even an over-sight - you manually moved money out of the account which you didn't have.

Taking all this into consideration you now feel that the bank shouldn't have charged you even though it was entirely your own fault/doing.

I get more and more amazed by the posts on these forums daily.
What next?
I was sawing my foot off with a B&Q saw and now I find that I'm walking with a bit of a limp - can I sue B&Q?
