Time off after having my wisdom teeth out: annual leave or sick leave?

So I've got two impacted wisdom teeth and a third getting there, so the doctors are going to put me under and whip them out. They reckon I could need up to five days off afterwards to recover.

Now I was assuming that I'd have to take this out of my holiday allowance, but friends and family all believe that this would be covered under sick leave.

Is there a definitive yes/no on this or would it depend on your contract? It's not the kind of thing I can think of the keywords to Google for!

Ask your dentist if they will write you a note stating how long you will need to recover. I'd try and take it as sick leave first if you can.

Also make sure you ask the dentist for your teeth in a bag. Then if anyone in HR gets arsey you can slap em down on the desk as proof :D

Well if you are "going under" that counts as an operation and to be honest operations aren't holidays, it will be recovery time for a neccessary procedure I assume?

I'm sure your Dentist/GP will be able to write something to that affect.

I could be wrong but it makes sense to me!

5 days ???

From the x-ray my bottom wisdom teeth are at right-angles to the rest, the 'top' of them pushing up against the roots of the ones in front- they're barely out of the gum. Apparently it is going to hurt when they do it, a lot.

Still enough of that before the no medical thread police arrive :D

My wisdom teeth have been coming through for a while and you're like an old man compared to me (I'm 18, no offence)!

Anyway, get a note then it = sick leave.

My bottom 2 are the same, and hopefully they are not going to move. I did not expect 5 days thou, my dad had an keyhole hernia operation and was back to work in 3 days !

You can take sick leave, or you can take holiday, it's your choice. Most companies have a sickness policy of some sort that details how they manage absence, and it would be this that's worth consulting to decide which is better for you personally.

Recovery from a necessary operation is certainly covered under sickness though.

I ain't trying to play a hard man here but 5 days seems excessive to recover from a tooth being pulled out.

Probably, but that's what the doctor said. Maybe she just thought I was pathetic :D

I reckon it will just be a couple of days to get over the pain, I'm not one for milking days off work for the sake of it.

probably the length of time recommended for the anasthetic (assuming general) to leave your system or to the point where it would be considered medically "safe" to drive/operate machinery etc

Just take it as sick leave one day at a time, and when you feel better go back to work. Most doctors won’t give a "sick note" until after 7 days anyhow.
