The word "Guvvy"

"Im going to do a Guvvy Job"

Where did that come from? maybe its a northern thing. Normally means a little job on the side of your normal employment. For example a Joiner might work for the council, but do a "guvvy job" for the bloke in his street.

Ive said it myself and heard it said in the trades.. but does it come from somewhere?

lol.

If i was say, really good at fixing computers, but worked in tesco. I would say "Im working in tesco, but i still do a few guvvy jobs on the side". referring to fixing computers for a wee bit cash in my spare time.

thats an example.

thought it was a common word. seemingly not lol

Yeah, it's common slang up here. Looks like I'm from the same town as the op.
I'd guess it's short for Guv'nor, or Governor - being your own Guv for the job?

It goes without saying on OcUK... do declare your extra earnings to the tax man...

The word granfer never gets used anymore, everyone i know calls them grandad. It must be a somerset thing really caue thats what ive always called him.

Yeah, hear people use it at work sometimes. I hadn't heard of it before I started working in this trade though.

Do I Know you? Seriously? Work in engineering?

Yes I know the saying, as do most people in engineering.
Though I do believe its

"Govy job is short for government job, an. expression used to identify a project for a home. or personal use being fit in at work"
