Opera 9.60 released!

Wow! I've been using Firefox for the last couple of weeks, and I'd forgotten how fast Opera is at loading. I just wish it had support for some of the plugins I've gotten used to now.

I'm having problems with viewing certain webpages, I'll grab a screen shot in a second.

Edit - here we go :

As you can see it's quite annoying. I use The Times Online website as a replacement for my daily newspaper, hence I read through a great deal of it everyday. The page loads up fine in I.E. 7. Does anybody have an idea as to why that's happening?

Which ones would those be?

I think I've been away too long I've forgotten everything I loved about Opera. Most of the plugins I wanted are built in. Only things missing are:

Plugin for Delicious (but I'm trying out Opera Link)
FireFTP (I can live without that and just open Firefox)
ScreenGrab! to save a JPEG of a web page.
And Gmail and Reader notifier.

Ooh, I say. Thanks! :)

If only there was a way of backing my notes up that I make in Opera. Copy and paste, here I go! :D

Installing a new version of opera on top of the old one should not delete all your notes. Also if you click File > Synchronise Opera you can sign up and log in to Opera Link and all your notes, favourties, speeddials and more are saved by opera so any place you ahve opera installed, ie: home and work you can log into opera link and all those parts are synchronised and it is sooo handy. I use it for my desktop pc at home and opera on my phone. Just waiting for them to enable opera link into Opera Mobile

Thanks,

Neil

Ah you're right, I haven't copied and pasted all my notes back, and they're already loaded in. The thing is when I install a new version of any software, I prefer to uninstall the old version, and e.g. run Ccleaner to get rid of any rubbish left behind. I forgot this time.

With some progs and updates that would make sense. :) But I think Opera is OK to install new versions over previous ones. :) You'll still use the same profile(s) so just the actual program files get updated with a new Opera release.

yeh, I do that with some applications but not really for Opera as that seems ok with do an overwrite upgrade and I find the notes feature very very handy so opera link is a godsend to me

My biggest gripe with Opera is that when you click on 'Go to first new post'. sometimes it just sits there even though it's not loading images.

Hmmmm you can kinda work your way around these i guess.

I use Delicious, i have a button that javascript sends the current link i'm at to delicious, and i've set up a custom search under "d" to search bookmarks there, which covers all my delicious needs.

Opera sucks at FTP, for something that likes to call itself jack of all trades (newsgroups, irc, bittorrent etc...) i'll never understood why they didnt go a little further with the FTP implementation.

I guess screengrab is clever and makes everything out of view on a website a jpg? I have no idea how to do this with opera (i've never needed to personally). I do seem to remember i fell across a website that does this though so a simple javascript button could do the same thing, tried googling to find a suitable website but failed so far.

I keep track of Gmail and facebook and all manner of other things with Digsby (and its also my IM of choice as well). The only thing it doesn't do right now is Google Reader, but they've spoke about adding that and IRC and all manner of things too, so i guess i can only wait.

So with this long post and generally not much help, thats generally what i do whilst using Opera, it would seem a lot of that is a work around rather than a solution though i tend to agree!

Yeah I've switched back to Delicious now because you can't tag links with Opera Link which is a shame. So I'll set up a custom search for Delicious.

Never heard of Digsby looks very intresting.

Does anyone know how to make dictionary, encyclopedia and search, when you highlight a word and right click, open in a new tab?

Is the bittorrent client even anygood?

No, its ***.

I wish Opera would release a cut down light version without the useless gubbins i don't really use, or at least options on install. I generally don't need the Mail part, nor the bittorent client, or IRC, god knows whatever else....!

mr.sly:
When you right click to open them in a new (background) tab hold ctrl+shift then click, or just shift for an active new tab.

Digsby is awesome, only thing that seriously holds me back is lack of group chat support at present, and to some extent audio/video (but most multi alternatives fall down at this hurdle too).

Amen! The torrent part of Opera is surprisingly rubbish considering Opera's reputation as a client. There are settings you can only change when you actually add a new torrent. I know for a fact that one of the first things Lepers and I do with a new install is turn off the torrent support and use uTorrent I guess.

As for the Mail etc I agree with Lepers, it'd be grand if Opera would make their browser a little more customisable when it came to installing parts of it, or not! :)

how do you get your bookmarks into that opera link thing? seems to be manually - one at a time when i logged in. if that's the case then it's carp. i'm not adding them all 1-by-1

Just log into Opera Link within the browser (File -> Syncronise) and it does it all for you. Couldn't be much easier really...
