The Story of the Guitar

I missed it but I'll catch it on BBC4 or iPlayer sometime and look out for the next two.

Yes, it would probably be more accurate if they said the western world's favourite musical instrument, but it's really nothing worth thinking about too much.

Thinking about it Mr Platypus could have a point.
Surely the drum is the worlds favourite musical instrument?

Yes, but drummers are barely human so should they count? The guitar is certainly the most expressive instrument outside of the human voice.

BTW, if you go on the program's BBC page they've got some good video clips that didn't make the cut. Iggy Pop's clips were great!

Don't get me wrong I know some drummers who are nice guys and vaguely normal...but they're in the minority! I'd consider investing in a drum machine for less aggro. And why when packing gear away, do you have to help them with their stuff? They never help me with my bass gear or even the PA And £6/£7 for a pair of sticks? Takes the biscuit.

In the videos on our site is the biggest starstruck drummer in the world who I eventually had to sack.
He'd turn up 30 mins before the gig and expect everybody to bring his gear in and help him setup which 2 of the band members did.
At the end of the evening he never lifted 1 finger EVER to help with our gear.
He also used to collect the money and skim off the top eg take £50 off a £250 payment and divide the rest by 5.
He got £90 and we got £40
He did this often and when I confronted him he didn't see a problem with it because he was the star of the show.

The drummer we have now is so different that I don't really think he is a drummer.
He gets to the gig 30 mins before everybody else and then helps everybody else in with their gear.
At the end of the night we help him load his car and then he helps us.
It is very unusual for a drummer.

Well, it is. I don't know why you disagree, did you get particularly attached to the recorder whilst at school?
No, I spent 7 years training to be a concert pianist and violinist.

You?

I think dmpoole is right, in terms of "get up and have a go", I'd say its the drums.

The guitar being the most expressive instrument outside of the human voice? I'd says it's subjective and down to the musician. I'd go for the piano over the guitar any day..

Played Guitar for 11 years, bass for 3 and Harmonica for 18 months.

Why I say the guitar is more expressive is the variety in which it can bend pitch, which it can do closer to the human voice than other instruments. The quarter-bends and sideways vibrato techniques of the great players really shows that off

Obviously some people prefer instruments as Piano and violin and while they are popular instruments in their own right, they don't have that variation.

Exactly, so producing greater expression on a piano is harder then doing so on a guitar?

Obviously, each to their own :). I love both instruments.

The Problem with this is the fact that a drumkit is more expensive and you need the space and its noisy.

As covered in the documentary, the guitar is cheap and easily accessible and portable.

Guitars were selling in the US for mail order for 9$ hence its domination in the states this made the guitar available for the masses.

Grandmothers and mothers in the early 50's could afford to buy their kids guitars. A drumkit would have been a weeks wages even more.
