Virtual war simulator - used in Iraq/Afghanistan.

Shall we play a game?
Love to. How about Global Thermonuclear War?
Wouldn't you prefer a nice game of chess?
Later. Right now lets play Global Thermonuclear War.

Joshua pwns this.

Anyone else find this a bit of a joke?

Nothing like this is ever going to prepare someone for the real thing.

At least put some effort into creating the simulator, I've seen games like COD4 and Battlefield BC that seem more realistic than this.

So should the military ban all war games too because it is not real?

Realistic as in graphics or content, because I do not ever recall seeing soldiers or enemy forces dolphin diving or soldiers being killed with a headshot from a 9mm pistil at a range of 1km when there have been reports from the front lines or are you upset because you can not re spawn in a real combat situation?

Doesn't look like very good software =/

Althoug i'm sure they can create a lot more scenarios which are more relevant then the fps games we all play.

The graphics aren't what matter for them, it's the variables which are going to come up in a real life scenario.

Made me laugh when he drove into the bloke, and he was supposedly dead, yet still throwing stones on the floor. Lool!

*Maybe they should just all use pistols on a CoD4 sniper map, to help get their aim up in training for the real thing, or something...*

Humans do not like killing each other. In most armies the soldiers bond with the people they are fighting with, so it makes it easier to kill others as you are protecting someone you care for. This is a common theme from soldiers that they are not fighting for Queen or country or regiment but for their mates. This is encouraged by the military for obvious reasons. I read the US military put all troops through simulators to get them used to killing so that when the real time came they would do it automatically.

Breaking news.................

The MoD has announced plans to introduce Dolphin diving and wall hacking into the infantry training program

You have no idea what "realism" is, do you?

I know that those games are neither as realistic as you can get, maybe a re-done version of AA, but at least they could be used as a base.

Nothing is ever going to be as truly 'realistic' which is why I think it's pointless using this 'simulator', which seems pretty poor by what is capable by todays standards.

It's just training in situations that could come up, and how to deal with them, not how to dolphin dive :p
I think it's a good idea to provide simulations of angry bystanders throwing stones at you and all that, and doing so on a PC is much more cost effective, and time effective than hiring a load of actors or some such.

Whats the problem?

Our Army down here have done this for ages IIRC

I don't have a problem with them using a simulator, just this one.

Or do you honestly think that it seems useful?

It looks like some sort of arcade game from the 90's.

You accidentally run someone over and he lies there throwing rocks still.

The guy gets out of the vehicle to go and speak with the press reporter and they don't flinch at him.

AA was good. This isn't.

I think this is the new VBS system, the original (VBS1 strangely) was launched after Operation Flashpoint for the PC iirc.

You say it “seems pretty poor by what is capable by today’s standards”; I disagree, I think it is more than competent as a training simulator – you only need to look at the past modifications for OFP and ArmA to see what can be done. This ‘VBS’ system is also supposed to have far more complex modelling of physics too.

As for your original point, I don’t find it a joke; sure it’s not going to turn someone into a stone cold killer (that’s what GTA is for :p), but it will at least let soldiers get an idea of how to deal with the order of battle etc.

Scort.
