Blu-Ray drive for Xbox360

The only thing noisy thing about the 360 (apparently, I have no problem with it myself) is the DVD drive. A external drive that spins and a very low speed makes no noise. So there goes that problem. Next?

My 360 is still noisy even with the dvd not spinning, delta fans inside are never going to make it quiet, its just quieter.

Yeah but they aren't audible over a movie, granted that's subjective.

Like the PS3, it depends on the unit; an ex-housemate of mine has a 360 with fans so loud you can't even hear the DVD drive over them. Utterly useless for DVD playback to the point where he's bought a stand alone DVD player as he just can't be bothered with the noise the thing kicks out. I doubt he's the only one in the world with a unit that loud.

Seems interesting. I do own a HD-DVD drive for my 360 and i am just about to order a Blu-Ray drive for PC so this would be very handy as i love watching DVD's through the HD-DVD Drive on the 360

As said above fans can be noisy too, I've had 3 different ones and in my current elite the fans are probably just as if not louder than the benq drive in it :O.

if microsoft dont want to make one then why dont they let a third party company make one for the 360  we have third party steering wheels and control pads why not a blu ray drive:(

I think they're going to use the HD-DVD technology for the Xbox 720 game disc and not bother with Blu-ray just for films. Instead they will just continue to use the Xbox Live Marketplace.

In fact this would probably be quite good for them - they won't have to pay licensing fees to the BDA and it may curb piracy as there won't be any HD-DVD burners or HD-DVD-R discs out there by the end of this decade. What do you lot reckon to that theory?

And of course, standalone Blu-ray players will be reasonably cheap so no need to use a games console to watch a BD.

I'm sure Microsoft would be more than happy to let a third party modify the core Xbox 360 OS to allow playback of their main competitors format... or not.

Not this carp again...

Microsoft's Larry Hyrb has spoken to Aaron Greenburg for the Major Nelson podcast, out at TGS to put theser rumours to bed. To quote Greenburg: "we have no plans to integrate Blu-ray with Xbox Experience... we believe the future is digital".
