If the Xbox 360 had've had HD-DVD drives installed as standard do you think HD-DVD would have come out on top? People say what helped BluRay is the fact they're in every PS3. Now with there being like 3 times has many 360s out there in peoples homes I believe it would have made a huge difference.

I believe so because HD-DVD would have had a year head start but the 360 would have been more than £270 at launch.

Probably, though the xbox 360 would have most likely sold less as a console. Also doesn't really matter now unless microsoft have invented a time machine.

especially now there less than £3 a pop :p

blue ray will fail as did hd dvd as people are not willing to spend £20+ for any film anymore regardless of format.

Indeed.

HD is more and more becoming mainstream as I see it. Sky is helping with their service. PS3 coming down in price etc.

Even people with HD-DVD enjoying what they already have.

Blu-Ray companies really need to drop the prices NOW, this time of the year is crucial!!!

But to agree with what has already been said, if xbox had an hd-dvd drive from the start it would have been a success! Games & Movies alike with downloaded and interactive content extra's etc...

A shame really in some ways, even though I've never had a hd-dvd.

Was the HD DVD format complete at the time of launch? I only ask because HDMI wasn't which leads me to believe HD DVD might not of.

The Xbox 360 was fundamentally flawed in build quality terms as it was, adding yet another component at launch would have crippled it even further. After all, the whole red lights syndrome is well-known...(no I don't like the PS3 either)

I don't see why the didnt discount the price on HD-DVDs from the start (I know now its only discounted because its to clear stock) but if they introduced it at a loss per disc, they'd have got their name into the marketplace and Mr. Average Joe would surely think that HD-DVD is a better version (in laymans terms) of DVD because of the name rather than not knowing what Blu-Ray is.

Had an HD-DVD been included in the 360 who knows?

I like my movies to cost less than £20 a pop. I think that's why I prefered HD-DVDs.

Too right - I am a blu-ray user but I look at the high street media places and feel the sentance "You are ******* kiddin' me?!" when I see the price of blu-ray - to the point of £30-35 a disc!

Online is close to DVD price in some places (around the £15-18 mark) which is far more reasonable.

I doubt the X360 would have sold much more than the PS3 if the HD-DVD was inbuilt since their price points would have been so similar. I guess we would still therefore be in the format war...

I picked up Beowulf bluray off of ebay for £12. I firmly intend on paying similar prices for all my future blurays.

The trick is to not be sucked into the hype and have to buy on day one.

I don't think we would tbh. Any one buying a new console would have bought the 360 by default as there'd be no real competition. Granted the PS2 did and still does to an extent offer good value for money but it wouldn't of been able to compete in terms of HD.

Why do people keep saying you have to pay £20 for a blu-ray movie? I've bought 4 so far, 300 (£9.99), Stargate (£9.99), The Fith Element (£9.99) and Batman Begins (£11.99). I'm going to be buying the super duper 5-disk blu-ray final cut of bladerunner soon and that comes in at £19, i could pick up the bog-standard 2-disk version for £12.

Personally, i don't think HD-DVD could have ever won, at their launch Blu-ray had multiple times the amount of studios behind it than HD-DVD and that's one of the most important influences on new mediums; the more people that put their product on it, the more it'll sell.

I don't know about it winning but it would certainly allow more space for developers to use for games.

HD-DVD would also still be alive today if it was built into the 360.

And the 360 would have been delayed an extra 9 months or so like the PS3. Also they may have had the same techinal problems and not been able to get the drive speed fast enough so they'd have had to make the HD mandatory, ergo no Core/Arcade.

So, HD-DVD may have won or still been around but on the flip side I don't think the 360 would even be level with the PS3 let alone beating it.

No. Because HD-DVD is a video format not a gaming format and would therefore have had little impact. A lot of people, I would say most, don't buy a console to play their movies.

As already stated I suspect there would have been a delay in the release of 360 if they had included the HD-DVD drive, but even with the console being more expensive upon release if they had still beaten Sony to the market it would have sold similar numbers as people are generally very impatient.

As to whether it would have won over Blu-ray I'm not so sure due to the fact that firstly Sony Pictures would have supported Blu-ray until the end and Disney were insistant that their films could be region locked. I'm sure both would have moved if HD-DVD had all the other studios but it wouldn't happen straight away so we would probably be in the same position as we were a year ago but with HD-DVD being the stronger format...

The biggest problem with the price of Blu-ray's is not so much the price of new films as you will pay £4-5 more for the HD version but at present the pre-owned films or older films are still expensive often being more than double the price of the DVD version.

I don't think it would have. BluRay had a lot more support from big manufacturers didn't it? I think in the end it would've had the same outcome.
