Afghan single mother receives a total of £170,000 a year in benefits

The mates i mentioned earlier they all lived in a 4 bedroom house so I dont disagree and i'd prefer to see every british person housed before we accept any immigrants it only makes sense but then you run into the situation where we have unemployed british people with 8 kids needing a house...and an immigrant from a war torn country begging for safety.

Where do you draw the line? that whole story stinks imo, they could have done an in depth article on the failings of the housing system and instead they drag a poor family into it, i doubt they were trying to highlight the plight of the family.

and for what it's worth my family (well half of it) isn't british.

I'm actually going to my local council to have a talk about my own housing situation tomorrow so I might post back about it at some point.

It's disgraceful. Thing is though, this story will feature in the news for a bit, people will talk about it, maybe she may be given some stick for it.
But after all of this, it will be fogotten about and she will be sitting in her nice big house with no doubt a nice big smug grin on her face.
It's people like that who make me annoyed when there are people out there, including myself, working stupid amount of hours, getting **** pay for it and then something like this happens.

If benefits are so great why dont you quit your job?

Me or Tibbs? I've pointed out time and time again that for single "households" it isn't the case. Quitting your job voluntarily tends to get you evicted (if you're renting - landlords generally don't like unemployed people) and you're ineligible for benefit for 26 weeks as well...

Tibbs, i dont usually quote someone when my post follows theirs. (sometimes get caught out by some fast posters though :P)

it just irks me, people seem to think all these people claiming benefits are living the life of riley, i got kicked out when i was 15 had to wait 3 weeks for a flat and anyone who thinks its easy or any kind of a cushy lifestyle is a fool.

You got a flat in 3 weeks, and you were likely housed somewhere else before that, given that you'd be a priority. No, it wouldn't be easy, most 15 year olds don't know how to look after themselves for starters.

If I make a claim for housing, I have to wait 33 days just to get a yes\no answer, and I would not be given a flat (I'm not old or young enough apparently)...

Payment should be backdated if eligible. Also LHA means you can go private and then reclaim rent within the allowance.

I just don't believe in not working for your money. I work very hard and get hardly anything for it, yet instead of giving up I keep working.

Well, if you do earn very little arent you eligible for some form of housing allowance and working tax credits? You wouldnt be paying net tax until you reach a certain point. This level is even higher for families.

A single person on benefits gets £55 jobseekers allowance a week and accomodation.

For LHA use this

https://lha-direct.therentservice.gov.uk/Secure/LHASearchIntro.aspx

to calculate what you are eleigible for. It is determined by market rates in your area.

No actually i was sleeping in bushes and my mates house when he could sneak me in.

Well, we've both been in the same boat before then in that case.

Precisely why I'd have problems, I have yet to meet a private landlord who will rent to unemployed single people...I was doing tech support but that business has packed up.

Her landlord wouldn't sign for it, assuming she's renting privately..if its a mortgage she's paying then I'm not sure on the rules for that.

Housing allowances are only given if you have capital less than £15k (or thereabouts). So if you can buy a house and put down a deposit you'd be ineligible.

I understand the landlord dilemma though. What you'd have to do is put down a 3-6 month deposit and it should help. But you have to be certain that you are within the LHA allowance if you do this. Obviously raising 3-6 months money is very difficult.

While we're on this subject, the housing charities are a complete joke, the amount of messing around with paperwork and bureaucracy reminds me of my Learndirect days...except that was to do with students as opposed to people in danger of becoming homeless.

All immigants who are claiming money off the state should be given vouchers for very basic things, water, food, basic accomodation and clothing. Giving them cash in their hand is stupid, a lot live better off then the average bloke, earning an honest crust. I'm not making millions and I don't want the money that gets taken off me through tax to go to someone who's not going to contribute to the country and has never intented to do so.

I understand people come here to get away from war and issues that threaten their lives, but the ones who just pop over with the only intention of living off our country, well they should be thrown out if they haven't got a valid case.

I'm not actually looking into buying or renting a house just yet. I live with parents so I know 1st of all, I have it easy. My main concern is for the people who have worked so hard for a lot less. They should be priority imo.

Well, if there were a few simple changes in employment law, I would never have needed to seek assistance in the first place, I'd be supporting myself no problem.

Is it a coincidence that the economy is turning to crap after all these countries have joined the European Union? All these Polish, Indian etc.. families sponging off the state....

Putting all your eggs in one basket so to speak....
