I'm looking to spend a maximum of £700 on a new LCD, 40" and above.

I have found a couple

Samsung Series 5 LE40A559P4F £681 inc vat
Samsung LE40F86BDX £699 inc vat

Which one is the better one to go for? Also are there any other contenders for this sort of budget?

Thanks

But I thought LCD was better than plasma? I may hook my laptop up to the screen too so what would offer overal clarity? I know plasma offers greater picture in the larger sizes but what about the gas issues and ghosting/logo burning?

ghosting and logo burn is no longer a real issue, unless you treat it very poorly and regularly have the same image displayed for most of the day.

I would go look at them if you can and see which you prefer. I have lcd but sometimes wish I had gone plasma due to mostly watching SD, which is slightly better on plasma.

If you will regularly use your screen as a monitor from laptop then lcd all the way.

LCDs have better margins for the sales guys and the manufacturers so they'll feed you all manner of spurious rubbish to push to towards LCD.

Unless it's going to be for PC desktop use for high proportion of it's time (and I don't mean gaming or watching films, but actual desktop) then plasmas are generally superiour from around 40" upwards.

Hmmmm i'm in a bit of a dilemma then, I will be using it with my mac whenever I can, but i'll be using my ps3 and watching dvds whenever. Is the picture quality that much better on a 42" plasma vs 40" lcd?

I think so, and so do a lot of other users on this board, but it's entirely subjective and the most important thing is that you like the picture produced and that it meets your needs.

If I were you I'd try to find a local indy retailer who does Sony LCD and Panny Plasma (and LCD) and do a proper test with your own inputs (mac) and films that you know well. You can find tried and tested setting for the screens at AVforums to use rather then the brach bright settings that shops tend to use.

Yeh, and if the retailer comes across like they aren't too interested in assisting you or appreciate the time you want to test before buying then walk away and find another that are interested, some places simply want to baffle you with sales crap and then have you pay and leave asap

Ok, well I have read some reviews and the £699 sammy lcd seems to have some great comments about it. What i'm going to do is go to the shop with my macbook and try it out properly. The thing that turns me away from the panasonic is that it doesn't have a native 1080 resolution.

Samsung don't have UK based support either, so if you have a problem you can't get anyone to have a look at it.

1080p is only an issue if you are going to be an extensive desktop user and you are going to be sitting within 6' (less than 2m) of the screen. Otherwise your eyes simply can't resolve the differences between 1080p and 720p.

Check out a Panasonic plasma in a shop first. I was going to go that direction, but the ringing on SD content was so bad I ended up with a Toshiba 42" at £599

Was it the PX or PZ you were looking at?

I must admit that I didn't like SD on the PZ, but I've never heard it criticised on the PX.

I would also be interested in that as I was planning on buying the Panny PX80 at the weekend and I mostly watch SD.
