Piracy- it's killing PC gaming

Heard about this on another forum, lots of gameplay videos up on YouTube now.

Maybe people will finally admit that piracy is rife on consoles.

Most chipped 360s are banned from xbox live, so they essentially can never play online again unless they buy a new unit, the PS3 is yet to see any pirated games at all. The Wii is pretty pirateable i'll give you that one.

Piracy is nowhere near as rife on consoles as it is on the PC.

360 version of Saints Row 2 has been on Torrent sites for like a week now, who cares?

The "care" comes from big publishers *****ing about the PC being so rife with piracy that it's not worth developing for anymore, especially exclusives. What they actually mean to say is that their wallets aren't fat enough so they want to go elsewhere.

Which would be fine if they just admitted it as we know they're businesses and not charities.

We're just sick of the lies and being treated like criminals.

They're doing it wrong.

Doesn't bother me, don't have a 360... have to wait for pc one to come out, and then finding it in the shops will take a while I guess :(

Even if it was / is leaked for PC, I'm still buying it. I always buy my games. And because of the majority of gamers who still buy games (even if they download the pirated version first) we can be sure that PC / Console gaming will never die.

Piracy isn't as bad as people make out. If anything, it actually convinces people to buy the full game because they like it so much.

Apparently consoles are actually more pirated than the PC, because the PSP and DS are so easy to h4x0r.

That I believe. I saw hundreds of handheld consoles and games at many stalls while in Turkey. Blatant piracy at a discount price. And the local authorities really don't care lol.

Piracy is just an excuse for a crap game, when Clifford Bellendinzki said it, what he wants to try an convince himself of (and persumably everyone else) is that there are loads of people playing Unreal 3 and it is a really awesome game and he did his job (which is only to make half decent games), just most of the people playing it also stole it.

Not the truth, that nobody was silly enough to either buy or steal it because its one of the worst, most shallow games ever contrived... him admitting that risks job security.

Piracy is just an excuse, reality is that most games devs automatically focus their attention to the console market cos its mass market and thats where the money is, the devs run a business so its simple maths and a no brainer

Piracy is very convenient thing to blame when you make your blockbuster game that not enough people liked and they have to answer to publishers. Crysis (that did sell well but not as well as they expected), UTIII, Spore and more, all the publishers spoke out about piracy as their games weren't selling well.

There has always been the excuse from large software companies saying if people didn't copy the games they would reduce the prices, this was from back in the days of ZX Spectrums and Atari St's etc, they didn't get the problems with the Cartridge consoles like SNES and Megadrives. Anyway they haven't reduced the prices so hence people pirate software. They learnt that mistake in the music industry where people were downloading so they reduced the prices of the CD's so perhaps the Games industry should follow their example.

Exactly, look at the original Halo on the xbox, copied like crazy but no-one batted an eyelid because it also sold in millions, how fickle :o

I agree, it shouldn't matter. But I'm concerned many games publishers will not release game on the PC because, in their words, there is too much piracy on PC platforms.

snippeh

Can't really compare console hacking to PC hacking. Completely different scale really.

I didn't know that. How do you know?

The more software companies use the 'rented' 3 installs only software thingy, the more people will become disenfranchised and look elsewhere. Pirates have their day in the sun, and the users still get the game they want (without feeling like they have been screwed with thier pants on by the developers).

For the record, I've never used pirate stuff... but I'm sure the day will come when I'll be tempted.
