We've all seen the fun and games when these two play together, do who should it be? Lampard, Gerrard or both? Could a passing don make this a poll?

For me, it needs to be Gerrard when fit and Lampard as a back up.

I rate both very highly. Although they play the same position they are quite different players. Lampard is more technical in and out about type of player, whilst Gerrard is more of a take control of the game and drive forward type.

They both should be regularly playing for England so I'd say pick whoever is better suited for our opponents.

Lampard all the way.

Gerrard might be able to smack a ball and run around more, but he never turns it on for England, while Fat Frank is a better passer, and in some quality form.

Gilly you always say Gerrard is the best DM England have, but when was the last time he actually played a proper DM role? Given his love of wandering off wherever he's told to play, do you really think he'd stay put?

I'd much sooner have Hargreaves or Carrick as DM these days. Carrick and Lampard would be my first choice middle pairing, while the other two would work better for the big teams.

If you want to play both then Gerrard has to play the defensive role but if you're going for just the 1 of them then Lampard so Gerrard doesn't get injured.

The last time he played it was the last time he was asked to and that was vs Brazil and he got the motm. Since then (and before) Gerrard's been shifted around all over the pitch to fit other players in the side.

Both.
I can't think of many other sides who are lucky enough to have 2 players of such quality in MF who can do everything include get you goals, you play the pair of them and worry about the others.
If the media just stopped using them as a scapegoat there wouldn't be a problem at all and there are far more worrying issues about the England team than who to play out of the pair of them, the lack of a decent RB for example:)

Can't say as I agree there JG. Brazil/Argentina/Italy etc sides of the past have had very good/world class midfielders coming out of there ears and they have been happy to bench them to have an overall stronger andmore balanced squad. The best XI players do not make the best England XI.

I have an abject loathing of the English media and how they hype up and kick down our players and aspirations as a footballing nation in equal measure. However the problem persists that Gerrard and Lampard cannot play as a midfield centre pairing. So the issue of making them a scapegoat is moot in my eyes. We have had Sven, McLaren and now Capello who can only find a formula of putting in a 3rd central midfielder to accommodate them two. There has to come a time and say that it might not actually be the coaches and it is the players who can't gel. The midfield three system creates another problem in that a front two can never create any meaningful partnership in the way that a Beardsley and Lineker or Shearer and Sheringham did. There is nothing wrong with having a fully functioning England team with a Gerrard or Lampard for that matter coming off the bench.

To be honest I think thats the kick up the arse that some players need as well. To see someone like Gerrard or Lampard on the bench might make some players look back and say "Well **** me if they are on the bench then my place might not be safe" and it might take there performances to another level as well.

Liverpool fans may hang me for this but I would put Lampard gets the nod from me. This has nothing to do with any club level rivalry but I really think the pressure of expectation on Gerrard is beginning to tell. His decision making at international level leaves a lot to be desired i.e. when to pass run and shoot, he looks like he is playing two levels below his best when he pulls on an England shirt comapred to his Liverpool performances. Like other big name players in the past, not only from Liverpool because there has been a fair few from Utd, Arsenal & Chelsea, his performances have neither been consistent or good enough to warrant a prolonged stay in the team. In my opinion, his place has become cemented more on reputation than on results.
