P5Q pro dead Ethernet port?

Its been a fudging long day.

Build a system last weekend with a p5q pro. worked fine.

Booted it all up today and the connection to the Ethernet isnt working. It tried to acquire an address then says "no"

I've tried

-plugging directly in to the modem
-re-installing the Ethernet drives
-flashing the bios
-re-installed windows twice
-rebooting everything
-physically changing the cables
-other computer of similar spec tried on the connection fine
-OS is set to get auto address on the IP

There's no conflict but only a single orange light pulses on the Ethernet port on the mobo. In the bios there is an AI NET option which check the cable status and it tells me their length and stuff - Yay

All that is working fine and it reports it perfectly. Is there any chance that Ethernet port can be dead to receiving connections?


I'm close to taking my system apart and RMA the board but fear it will get rejected and i'll be left with a situation I cant sort. I'm pretty desperate TBH i've spent around 8 hours trying to sort this.

Presumably the nic can ping itself (loopback test), have you tried giving it a static address too? Perhaps there's a dhcp issue?
 
Mmm, that's pretty strange. So the device is recognised in device manager and the drivers install fine but you can't get online?

Only thing I can think of is to check to make sure there isn't a bit of fluff or something stuck in the ethernet port.

Have you tried to use windows generic drivers instead of the ones supplied by the board manufacturer. I seem to remember having a similar problem on a pc I built for a friend about 3 or 4 years ago. I swear it was an nvidia chipset and the ethernet wouldn't work using the drivers on the cd, but windows generic drivers did.

Hope you manage to solve it.
 
Try manually setting your IP on the PC and connecting via the router.

With you saying modem I assume cable.... that can be fussy about a PC with any other Mac address conecting hence the need to run Mac address cloning on the router.

You don't have Mac filtering or anything running on the router do you?

I did see that mac address cloning option on the router and it was off. Will look into it. I know its sad but i've just reset the bios and I'm installing windows again as I had installed different ethernet drivers about 5 times. Both from the orginal disk and the asus website.

Thanks Ace that's good to know, I just cant understand why it wouldnt work with a fresh install. Usually when a ethernet port goes prsumable its dead to the world with no lights. Like I said its even able to tell me the legth of the wire plugged in.

I dont know how to do that. I did try given it a static IP but no joy. will try again once re-installed.

Yeah all showing up fine and all the driver info there with no conflicts.

Once i've re-installed windows I'll put on the lastest driver from the asus website and let you guys know whats happening.
 
After another 2 hours of trying stuff this morning I dont think there's anything else to do but RMA it. I'm just worried the board will come back fine.

Oh and the orange light is solid showing that its "linked"

What are the chances of the RMA being tested and no fault found? I'm getting to the stage now where I might just chuck it and get another mobo.

If you open up a command prompt window and then type IPCONFIG
Do you get any output under Ethernet adapter local area connection?

Can you access the router from your PC by typing in the IP address?

What sort of router is it?

Which OS are you using?

Are you 100% sure you plugged the cable into the switch side of the router and not into the WAN side... usually the block of 4 ports is seperate from the WAN port.

A black box pops up for a split second then goes

Its a linksys wrt54g

AFAIR, its been dead from new and no new bioses or Drivers or anything make it come alive.

I simply use the other Gig NIC as I will throw the Mobo in the bin when I decide on what Mobo I want next lol.

Not as if I network these days.

I will enable it in Bios next reboot and try the cable in it to see if its lights up.


EDIT :

I enabled it in the Bios and get a Orange Light when I plug in my Eth-Cable to it but no 2nd NIC device shows in Vevice Manager or anywhere in Windows (both are Nvidia and have Drivers installed with NForce package for Mobo).

I do not install any of the Nvidia NAM crap that's buggy and this has always been the case with only 1 NIC working on many installs.

Have you read the asus forums , some motherboards have a glitch , my old 680i board did it , try powering down your pc , disconnect the power lead , press and hold the power on and reset buttons on your pc for 10 seconds , power back up and they should work( that is if its the glitch)

I know it sounds stupid but it worked for me and quite a few other people on the asus forums.

apparently the ethernet ports go into sleep mode and dont wake up when activity starts. doing this trick discharges the caps on the motherboard and effectively resets the ethernet ports.

worth a try i think before you rma it...

also dont install that nvidia network manager thingy , its buggy and causes problems.
