Quick legal question

My understanding was that if you rent a flat then it is your responsibility to keep the flat clean but that the landlord is obliged to provide you with the tools. I dont mean things like materials but rather tools.....specific to my question a hoover.

Is the landlord obliged to provide us with a hoover with which to keep the flat clean? If im right any chance someone could point me towards proof?

The dwelling needs to be habitable, but i don't think a hoover comes under that. Are you arguing with your landlord over who's responsibility it is to supply the hoover?

Student houses we stayed in always tended to have a hover, but I suspect that was more to do with them trying to encourage lazy students to keep the place clean rather than any actual obligation.

You know Im not sure they do, my mum has rented a fair few places and I dont think any of them have provided a hoover.

I think in a student house the landlords are smart to because they know a student probably won't go out and buy one!

I wouldn't expect a vacuum cleaner to be provided unless stated in an inventory.

You don't *need* a hoover to live, nor to clean.

Maybe the landlord should be legally compelled to supply you with a cleaner too?
Say 3-4hrs a week should cover it?

My Uni landlord did.

It was clever of them actually. I'm pretty sure the 5 of us would have trashed the place if we didn't have the cleaner coming to check up on us every Wednesday.

You can get them for around 40-50 quid in Argos. Probably cheaper. Even cheaper on the second hand markets.

If this was true, then every council home would have to be supplied with one.

Exactly. There is no legal requirement to provide a hoover.

i had this in one house i lived in

there was a certain shame that we wanted to avoid when she was coming round, so we'd all 'clean up before she comes'
