Have seen one of these new for £200. With comparably priced cards is it worth buying one? I remember seeing a Andtech comparison and the GX2 in most cases came out on top against GTX280 and below. Other sites the GTX280 wins?

Regards

Mike

SLI works pretty well in 99% of current titles and probably will continue to have strong support in the future... my own negative point about the 9800GX2 would be that its only 512Mb per core which limits you at high res and/or in future titles which use a lot of VRAM.

The GX2 is a stormer if you play at 1680x1050 or 1920x1200. The amount of VRAM is a bit limiting, but its as fast as the 280 in quite a lot of games and for £200 its a steal.

I wont be gaming at any res other than 1680. I dont suppose anything will be coming out soon that could effect prices of current cards and by soon I mean pre xmas?

Yes, GTX270/290 are coming out, and also a 260GX2, but those are supposedly just renamed GTX260/280's on a smaller 55nm process.

GX2 is worth it, its still one of the top cards out, it even beats the GTX280 in some.

Theres been so many threads like this...

The GX2 was one of the worst cards i've bought in a long time. Theres micro stuttering, some games not scaling well with SLI, memory limitations, inferior image quality (previous cards to NV's 2xx series cannot display as many colours, this is just as noticeable on the desktop aswell as in games).

Get a 2xx and you wont be disappointed.

Lol, really you must have had a bad card or didnt quite have it setup right or something.

I have a GX2 in one machine and a GTX280 in another, and there really isnt much between them upto 1920x1200 exept the price.
:p

A 260 or 4780? I havent seen a benchmark yet where either of those cards compares with a GX2. Why would you choose either of those? (I dont mean that in a rhetorical way, but as a question.)

Aye, I had one for six months and it worked like a dream. Top card.

apply 8x AA and watch the 9800GX2 curl up and die.

I have an OC'd 8800GT SLI in one PC and a 260GTX in the other - SLI works like a treat in 99% of cases and theres no microstutter, memory limitations are a slight concern... I agree about image quality and was suprised I noticed it - but I use a KVM so the display is the same and textures are noticeably slightly duller on the 8 series card(s) at the same settings - which suprised me - tho you'd only notice it from switching immediatly from one setup to the other.

How will the 260GX2 compare to a 9800GX2? Guess the 9800GX2 is 2x8800GTS, so the 260GX2 should be a lot faster?

Will be faster, wonder if they downclock them like they did on the 9800 GX2 though, as that was 2x 8800 GTS's downclocked to GT speeds.

GX2 isn't a bad card, it beats the GTX 280 in quite a few at 1920x1200 with 4xAA/16xAF.

No he didn't have 'a bad card' because I now own his old one. There is nothing wrong with the GX2 quite why Mr B has so many issues is beyond me.

I game at 1920x1200 and have had none of the problems he describes, yes there are a few minor SLI issues but on the whole it's a very good card.

In which games?

On the whole that's absoloute rubbish.
