Thanks for the info about compensation etc. I did have the presence of mind to photograph the pavement surface and her face with blood pouring down it!

She is feeling sheepish about the hard landing as only the night before she was regaling friends about her parachute jump some years ago.

Seeking compensation would be the right thing to do in this case, especially considering the dodgey paving is outside a home for the elderly. In some respects you should be glad it was your wife and not someone who'd of bled out.

I'm sorry about your mum btw, make sure you spend as much time with her as you can.
