I'll be upgrading my cpu soon for my main pc (kinda hoping for a bargain from our MM) and will be building my first media centre. Will my current cpu be up to the job or will the small cache let it down?

More than enough.

I have a media centre running on an AMD X2 3800 and it's fine.....

Unless you get a serious bargain in the MM look at the E5200, the cooler running will be a boost in the media center and it's faster with more cache for a few ££ more.

Error on OCUK.... it's actually 2MB cache 2.5Ghz 800FSB

I've got one in a Media Centre and its great, although its clocked at 3GHz, even at stock you'll be fine with HDWMV and HD mkv's. I assume you'll have a graphics card (or 780G moatherboard etc.) to decode HD-DVD / Blueray?

I'll prob build the htpc around small form or desktop so it doesn't take up too much room. I suppose £50 will buy me a decent enuf mb (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...(Socket 775) PCI-Express/AGP DDR2 Motherboard) and have a looksie at the 46xx series or secondhand 38xx

Yeah I know that particular mb won't fit in a sff case but it would be ok for desktop i think. Haven't seen ant decent mb's for sff. Can you recommend any?

Yeah, I'm already Intel and staying that way for some time ;). Basically I've got a 2180, 2 gb Geil DDR2-667 and a couple of HDD's already so all I'll need is a mobo, desktop or sff case (depending on mb), graphics, blu-ray player and a media controller thingy.

great chips for the money i use one for my htpc, 3ghz on stock volts and to be honest it can do everything......the smaller cache doesn't hurt it that much for gaming either it's got just enough.

3ghz on stock volts? To get 3.16 i'm having to pump 1.5v to the poor little chip!! It's stable tho...
