Hello

Someone is selling an item on a forum (who i know from years ago - so can trust him) However, he is from greece, and wants me to pay him via "IBAN" he sent me his number as Well,EG: IBAN number is: GR40 **** **** **** **** **** **** ALPHA BANK in GREECE. he also posted his name.

Not payed anyone this way before. So then, I go onto Lloyds TSB Banking, and try to pay him, but there are no options in my banking to pay him this way (only sort code/account). I don't want go go through the rigmeroll of going to the bank etc, and heard (through searching) that transfers can cost £30:eek: (which is about half the price of the item itself)

Any ideas?

There must this option, all banks have them, ask for an “International Payment Form", I get mine from the foreign currency desk at Barclays. It will cost you unless you ask him to bear the cost.

IBAN is just a bank transfer across countries, nothing dodgy about it. Its just a number that includes routing for how to get the money to the other bank. There is usually for a fee if your changing currency, but for a 3-5 day transfer shouldn't be more then a tenner.

With Halifax I had to supply a BIC as well as the address of the bank was a right mission, gave up in the end. Used Western Union and haven’t looked back :)

Go into your local branch, for example if you were with Barclays you would ask at the counter for a BIPS form (Barclays International Payment Form) you then fill this out (1 side of A4) then hand it back to the counter they then send the money from your account to that one in greece, you will need the IBAN / SWIFT number for any international payments.
