Audi TT V6 DSG

I'm considering a new car and want something that's not too conspicuous, is fun to drive and able to carry my bikes around so I came up with the 3.2 V6 TT. With 250BHP, a DSG box and a V6 growl it should fit the bill.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with these?
 
Only in bits - driven a TT 225 Quattro and an A3 3.2 V6 so thats car and engine but not gearbox.

I liked the TT. The steering was numb and it gripped rather than handled but it was reasonably quick, fun to drive and well built.

I liked the 3.2 V6 engine - it made the A3 pretty rapid, but it also made it rather nose heavy.
 
It's a bit of a toss up between a much better sounding engine and being a bit more understeery or having the tuneability of the 1.8T.
 
you can fit a large mountain bike in the back no problems with the seats folded down and the wheels off.
 
Take one for a drive. On paper it certainly ticks all the boxes and it gets plenty of good reviews, but the one I drove just completely underwhelmed me. Maybe my expectations were too high but...how do I explain this? It was...."meh". You really need to drive one to understand.

The engine sounded great, the interior was excellent and I actually quite like the looks even though I don't put my willy inside men, but the drive just didn't do it for me. If you want it for commuting to work then I suppose it would fit the bill but if you want it purely for fun then have a look at something else.

That was kind of how I felt too. It's almost too roomy inside to be a sports car, feels a bit more like a hothatch when you're sat in it. But then the room does make it reasonably practicle.

I was drawn to the V6 rather than the 1.8's since it has the DSG which I really like, although it is a potential big repair bill. A guy at work had his DSG need repairing on his TT and I gather it cost well over a grand. The V6 does sound great though, better than the Z4 I opted for.
 
I've got the gearbox, and it's very good, changes are pretty much instant and it's intelligent too, it seems to know what gear you want next, so if you come up to someone trawling at 45 in an NSL, and you slow down, it'll have the next lowest gear ready for you to drop and overtake.

I've been pretty lazy since getting my DSG though and i just drive it in auto all the time, it's good how it changes the gear changes automatically depending on how you are driving, say, if you're taking it easy, it'll only go to 2.5k rpm then change up, but if you put your foot down, it goes upto 6.5K rpm then change, the only downside in auto is if you're driving in 6th at 60, then come upto a slow driver again, you wait behind them until an overtaking space comes up, then you floor it, then it takes about 2 seconds to drop down into 3rd then gives you a good kick in the back and then it shifts.
 
As with all cars I think you need to drive one to see if it works for you but as others have said and I concur it is a little numb and though better than the previous TT it's still no Boxster in the handling stakes. Personally I would urge you to drive a Cayman S if possible if you want a sporty 2 seater and though much more money it may convince you that a second hand S is a better bet than a new TT. I hear and understand that you don't want anything conspicuous but I think a Cayman in the right colour can be subtle and can carry a bike too I believe. I think the TT is extremely stylish and is a better place to sit than most if not all of its competition but its not as good as a Cayman or a Z4 Coupe in my eyes.
 
I wouldn't bother with the 3.2. The noise won't be as nice but I think the 225 turbo or even the 240bhp TTQS is a much better proposition. Of all the mk1 TTs the 240bhp QS is the one I'd have.
 
My girlfriend and I have owned one for just over 2 years. All in all a good car although the DSG box can have some hesitation issues at junctions which can be unerving (although our car has had a new box fitted under warranty with the newest software so this issue has gone away) but using the paddles the shift is instant. Likes to drink epecially if you have a heavy right foot but you can return 32 - 34 mpg if your sensible. Build quality is good and in our experince the dealers are friendly and helpful.:)

If it takes 2 seconds then there is something wrong with your box.

The thing about DSG that I found is it calculates foot positions which is why sometimes it may be in 3rd at 30 or 4th at 30. Once you get to know it, it becomes easier to overtake ie. slip into sport mode or tap the - paddle.

I can't see the advantage of the 3.2 over the 2.0T for the new TT.

i may be exagerrating at 2 seconds to be fair, it's just not instant. it's probably realistically just under a second to drop from 6th to 3rd

The advantages are tax saving, more involvement and better fuel economy for them motorway trips. Though you won't get DSG.

The V6 Being such a large engine I always wonder why it doesn't deliver better performance even now.
