Hi guys,

Just wonding, i've had my E8400 since late jan 08 and the temp sensor has never worked properly it gives a temp if -70c most of the time?

other than that it works fine its just anoying seeing that - temp all the time.

Could I RMA it to OCUK or not?

What software are you using to monitor temps.
When I spoke to Overclockers regards my E8600 they mentioned it would be best to go direct to Intel.

tried all sorts, speed fan, real temp, asus pc prob. all give different temps.

just ran pc probe and it said my cpu is running at +186c and speed fan says -74c! nice!

Just contact Intel and they'll replace it under warranty. You might even get a new E0 stepping as a replacement :)

have you ever returned a chip to them? how long does it take? might be worth doing. whould they be able to tell if its been oc'd? or do they not check?

I have tried doing that with mine and they just saying that it proberly down to motherboard BIOS REV and I should contact the manufacturer.

My E8600 core temps did not move when stressed reading 30/36 on the cores regardless if idle or full load.
Overclocked to 4.4ghz with 1.3v going through they seem to move when stressed now

hhmmm.... Might email them and see what they say, but could be a lot more effort than its worth... would be cool to get a nice new chip tho.

I tried the same thing, i got exact same response, chip works fine but temps are screwy in coretemp, speedfan the lot.

Common problem with the chips, even with boards running a latest BIOS. It'l be fine since it works perfectly well. I've had one of these showing at over 500'C in the BIOS.

Surely it's not fine - it's broken. A feature of the CPU doesn't work. Now, it could be a BIOS issue or a CPU issue, but speedstep and C1E won't work with a broken temperature sensor. I've only ever seen this problem on ES chips, but the biggest issue about RMAing this for me would be why wait so long to RMA it?

And yes, I would RMA it because it's not 100%.

I appreciate that you work in the shop, but I think you'll find that telling folks that their poorly functioning kit is fine will just put people off buying any more upgrades in future. And when you get called out on it - and you will - it just damages your credibility.

whats your motherboard? you may be better off RMA'ing that.

its a p5k pro running the latest bios.

i'm not sure what to do now then. Has anyone RMA'd a chip to intel?

I know there was a prob with these chips when they first came out when i got mine.

I'm pretty sure you can't RMA direct to Intel - you need to do it through your retailer.

ok cool thanks guys. I'll give ocuk a call tomorrow and see what they say.

I'll be sure to post back and let you know what happens.

My opinion, if its a working processor leave it like that, its not worth the hassle.

I was 3 weeks without a processor only to be told there was no fault.

I know theres a fault with it, but anyway. Lesson learned.
