Should a student pay rent when they live at home?

Unless you live miles into the country then you should give up your car and pay "some" board/rent; what's all this opt out crap "they chose to have me so they should support me ...... I'll pay 'em back when they're older"

and "I don't care how hard it would be, I'd move out" ........... hahahahahah!

Had to stop there; I was gonna get banned.

I am 22 and still living with my parents, I happily give my parents 1/4 of my wage and still afford a car/lifestyle that I enjoy,

I work full time and I think it is only right that I pay my way

*edit*

The only reason we have 20MB broadband is because I live here and I probably eat as much as my mum and dad put together, plus my girlfriend comes round for tea quite often

Actually, I found a video on Youtube suggesting there was a law about it and that it was all a conspiracy by the new world order of lizard parents.

You expect me to walk to University everyday?

I have respect for my parents, which you don't seem to as you find helping them out when they are older comical.

I would genuinely do what i said

We obviously share very different opinions...

Have you an idea how ridiculous that is? Most parents are so desperate for their kids to stop using them as a taxi service and relying on them for lifts they end up contributing towards cars for their kids.

I dont think any parent would advocate their adult children in full time education giving up a car in order to pay 'board' - the amount they get every month would pale into insignificance alongside the hassle of having children who are not mobile.

idd, im fairly sure theres a lot of parents who want to subsidise kids into going to uni, since theres a hell of a lot that actually do. If they wanted some lodge they wouldnt help their kids out, resulting in kids having to give up education.

I guess one could say once one hits 18, that would be fair too. Just those extra 3 years of supporting your son/daughter when they are looking to get into the industry and make the most of their degree is helpful to many

While i'm in full time education (uni) and living at home my parents don't expect me to pay rent as if i moved out they would be needing to give me money (legal parental contribution). As long as i help out round the house and don't treat it like a hotel they are happy.

Man i hate people with this opinion but i guess that's what opinions are there for.I work one day a week for things like petrol, dvd's (i study film) and going out with mates twice a month, that's generally my £160 gone.

if your parents ask you to contribute and you can then you should.
Otherwise no, some parents want their kids to have a good quality of life, even while studying etc. Some parents wouldnt see the difference of getting an extra £100 a month off their kids.

Even if you can only afford to give them a little bit I think you should - shows you appreciate all the time and money they've spent bringing you up.

Anyway, just my opinion. :)

ok then imo there need to bring you up stops at 16 you can legaly move out then and you are finsihed in normal scool if you choose uni then either go away to uni or contribute to where you are now
its not the giving of money more the offer of it.
I wouldnt take money off my kids for board if they were in education but id not be happy if they were working and hadnt offerd.

I've never paid any rent and I still live at home, never been a scrounger though, if the TV broke, I'd buy one, if the car broke, I'd fix it. It's all the little things that keep it sweet..

yeah thats what im getting at sort of. also if i fancied somthing to eat that wasnt in the kitchen id go shopping and buy it and some other things if they were needed save my parents doing it its not much to

its nice to be nice.

at the end of the day its there house not a hotel.

I pay rent and stuff because Uni is 100 miles from home. In the summer my parents don't charge me board.

My brother, who is in full time employment on a permanent basis, pays £20 a week.

When I graduate, I will either do the same, or move out, moving out is the more likely, especially if I get back into IBM as a grad, working with them as an IT now.
