He added: "We are certainly getting more spiders coming into the UK - and it seems that more are spreading around the country once they are in."

False widow Steatoda paykulliana is a new resident in the UK

It is about 0.7-1.5cm (0.3-0.6in) in size and can bite.

While this spider had been spotted in the UK in the past, it was thought that no colonies had established.

But Stuart Hine, who runs the Insect Identification Service at the Natural History Museum, said this was no longer the case.

He said: "Now we have found it in Plymouth. And it looks as if it is here to stay."

Apparently we might have the black widow around a fair bit in the not too distant future.

Meh, not deadly. Nothing to worry about, we've had false widows (Steatoda nobilis) for well over a hundred years.

Probably the most common spider down here.
We get almost 1 a week in our house in spring and summer.

Now if a 1cm spider is all you need to worry about then count your self lucky:D

Also from that report:

The tube web spider (Segestria florentina), another non-native biting spider, has also been on the move, spreading from the South Coast much further north.

It is a large spider, measuring between 1.5cm and 2.2cm (0.6-0.9in), with green iridescence on its jaws.

Mr Hine said: "In spider terms, it has to be said that this is an aggressive spider.

"If you approach it, it raises its legs and bares its fangs.

"Most spiders will back away - this one will jump at you and bite."

I have two of those ****ers living in the wall around my garage doors. They greet me every night when I put the car away. I had no idea they could jump and bite.

Spiders turn me into a wimpering little girl anyway, now I'm going to have to nuke my garage :(

A friend of mine was bitten by a false widow when he was asleep a couple of months ago. He ended up with massive swelling around his neck and down his arm. Fun.

They're quite common in Bristol. I live in the centre and have a little private courtyard and they're always out there but never seem to stay in the same spot for more than a couple days. I even killed one the other day when he got too close to my chair.

Has anyone mentioned ex-humation via incandesence yet? I'm not hugely terrified of them as some seem quite timid and they do keep the other bugs down (I know, they are not bugs) Just the though of waking up with one in yer bed, its fangs plunged into yer man bits :O Gaah...
