This thread is not about fanboy-ism, I'm just asking a simple spec comparison and how they compare visually, and how the PS3 compares to the 360 now since all the updates both have received (Software and hardware).

Obviously for the PS3 you have bluray, but with the 360 there are rumours (again) about that as well. I already have a panasonic dvd upscaler (and it's damn good), so don't really need another, but perhaps I could sell that if I got the 360. Does the PS3 do upscaling as well, and how well?

Never really fancied the PS3, and heard bad things about the naff interface, being limited to coming out of games to reply to messages etc... thoughts please.

360 BR rumours have been deneyed already I thought.

PS3 does DVDs very well on my PS3, easily on par with the 360 imo.

Both are still recieving updates, and you've picked a pretty bad time to compare the interfaces to be honest. With Home and the NXE about a month away which could change views.

Ive got both, they are both great. Only reason i hardly ever use the ps3 is because the controllers are terrible.

Dont know who theyve had those handsets for years, theyre crap.

Maybe if youre youre young and have small hands or something.

I prefer the PS3 interface over the 360's I find it a lot quicker and smoother to use, even when in games, admittedly it could be a little quicker at loading icons when accessing it via games. The PS3 has amazing media capabilities, with the chance to drop a bigger hard drive in and have all your favourite movies on your PS3's hard drive for when you need them most! PS3 also works incredibly well with TVersity.

As for the 360, I haven't really ever liked the interface, I've always found it slow, even more so when accessing it in games. The upside for the 360 is Xbox Live! Years ahead of the PS3 online social network it's a great way to easily get involved with your friends in online gaming.

Visually the PS3 is slowly cathching up with the 360, some games look terrible on the PS3 compared to the 360, but PS3 exclusives do look amazing!

Just my 2p's worth.

Visually I don't think there is much in it tbh. When a game is developed on one as the lead platform then you can notice the difference but there are games on each which look fantastic.

This has been fixed in a previous update. You now have access to the XMB and messaging etc from within games.

Granted more people on here seem to prefer the 360's controller over the DualShock but it's just down to personal preference. Has nothing to do with hand size IMO as I have big hands and prefer the PS controller - personally I think it's about how you naturally grip the controller which makes the difference. I tend to hold game controller, mice etc losely so I find the 360 controller uncomfortable.

I'd agree with that.

Althought I prefer the Xbox controller layout, I don't think the PS3 is terrible. It's perfectly usable (especially with the Giotek triggers).

Thanks guys, that's precisely the level headed responses I was hoping for :) Keep 'em coming! :D

This does interest me, and is defo good to know. Would be unwise to base a decision based on old interfaces with it being so close.

The blu-ray thing is definately an issue, and I suppose might be a clincher.. but £100 extra clincher I'm not sure. DVD's look great on the upscaler and we tend to rent a lot rather than buy. (although I realise you can rent Hi def.)

Are most games developed for the 360 then ported to PS3? I.e. major titles like cod4, farcry 2 etc? Shame it's that way and it will obviously effect how good the games run/look.

I rent virtually all my Blu-ray films as there too expensive to keep buying, although if you shop around you can get some good deals now. As far as differences between Blu-ray and an upscaled DVD well imo the difference is definately there as long as the film in question has a good transfer. Also having a 1080P panel will offer the best quality, although not essential.

Not as much now, I believe both COD4 & Farcry 2 were developed seperately so both should be pretty identical on both consoles. Early on, and some of the lower budget games are developed on the 360 and then ported to the PS3 and most of those times the PS3 version suffered for it. Where as games like Burnout Paradise, DMC4, Star Wars & Dead Space were ported from the PS3 to the 360 and upto now have been pretty much identical :)

I hope that helps..

The difference between an upscaled DVD on the ps3 and a bluray, both on a 720p screen are negligible:)
I have the 60gb ps3 and it doesnt get much use. In many ways I wish I had an xbox, but then again 95% of pc games 'games for windows' I just plug in the 360 wired pad I bought and I have games at 1900x1200 at half the price.
So all I miss out on is halo3, forza2, fable2 etc, which isnt much.

If I were looking for a console and owned neither a ps3 nor a 360, I would get a 360 elite. A friend just got one after giving his brother his premium (or pro - whatever the launch good one was) and it is quiet. Also GT4 on the PS3 isnt out til 2010.

My PS3 is used pretty much purely for watching movies, it's fantastic as an up-scaling DVD player, better than the 360 that's for sure and I watch the odd Blu Ray too.

As for games I stick to my 360, the PS3 exclusives haven't done anything for me.

I actually have a 42 inch screen, but its a plasma panel at 1024x768. It has some funky hi-def conversion chip in it however that makes it all look pretty on the panel, so not true HD as such. I'm not sure Blu-ray will actually count for much on my screen lol.. but still can't help wanting it can you.

I doubt I will subscribe to xbox live as last time they tried to screw me over with the "we'll return the fee you took without us asking you in 3 months". I never saw the fee back!

Does one of them have a web browser at all? (As I can't actually ask on here about original xbox to run linux as it's a taboo subject :()

I prefer the PS3 interface and media playback, but I still would always play a cross platform game on the 360. I just prefer the controller, Live integration and Achievements.

PS3 exclusives tend to be very impressive though (just as most 360 ones do).

The PS3 has a reasonable browser, and can run Linux without voiding the warrenty.

I have a PS3 and the BR and DVD player are amazing. Dual Shock 3 pads fit my style perfectly.

But i wish i had a 360 for the games library. One day when i have a few spare £ i might get one or by that time it will be 720 :p

In my eyes what matters:

Ps3:
More expensive.
Not crackable.
Free mp.
Blu ray = bonus

360:
Cheaper.
Crackable
Greedy payed for mp.

Yer i have the same problem too, ps3 controllers yuck

Sadly it comes down to this for me as well. Its a pity because the PS3 hardware is fantastic and its getting better in every area. But when I sit down to play a game and have to use that gamepad it just brings every good area of the console down :(
