I need to buy a graphics card capable of 1080p files and blu-ray dvd's the one i have at the moment is terrible. I play the odd game but not many so it would really be for that purpose could you please reccomed me a good graphics card for me but not to pricey?

Thanks.

anything form ati's 2000, 3000 or 4000 series will be able to decode HD.

4670 or 4650 maybe worth a look

2000 and 3000 only gives 5.1 surrond sound over HDMI, 4000 series gives 7.1 surround sound. as for the way it processes the HD video, i have no idea apart from it suppose to work

for games you'll see much better performance with the new 48 series than the old 38 series card they replace, but aside the 5.1--7.1 HDMI audio, not much for decoding I dont think, the 48 series has improved it mildly but not amazingly.

Im not really going to be playing games on it so it doesnt have to be great for that so if there is one cheaper but is good for hd which one would you go for?

Go for any! I used to have a 2600XT and that was as good as the 4870 I've got now (for HD playback), if you're not gaming at all I’d go for any 2000+ series with a fanless design (no sound), that’s assuming you don't want 7.1 output.

ok thanks for the advice but is there any difference between 5.1 and 7.1

Well, earlier ATI cards could send 5.1 (6 channel) audio on the HDMI cable (using the ati adapter). Later cards can send 7.1 (8 channel) audio on the HDMI cable.

It all depends on what your AV amp has connection wise (does it support audio over hdmi?), and whether its 6 or 8 channel. If you are using the normal audio out connections from your soundcard, then either of them will be fine. :D

ok cheers thats great help
Im just getting my head around all this graphics card muble jumble
The only reason i need a new graphics card is for my new hd monitor

i was looking at the geforce 8800gt do you think this will do the job for hd

It'll do fine - however if you want to use HDMI audio you'll need to use an SPDIF cable (inside the PC). If you're outputting via DVI or not using HDMI for audio - then no worries it'll be fine.

TBH HDMI audio output, while useful, is overrated. I'd rather hook the sound card up to an amp and avoid the hassle - as well as potentially getting superior sound.

But then that will depend on the soundcard he has. If he has a creative card, and Vista he could be running into problems with playback such as the stuttering and clicking (or however you describe them) noises.

When you say DVI to HDMI Dongle, what if they graphics card doesn't come with one? I bought a 3450 to use in my HTPC but it only came with a DVI to VGA Adaptor.

Could I use any DVI to HDMI Dongle or is the ATI one special in some way?

Thank you :)
