Have supermarkets gone mad?

I was at the checkout of my local supermarket today and was asked by the cashier if I would like any bags, to which I replied, "Yes please, several". She then gave me a look of disgust and complete contempt. Here I was being tried and sentenced, and sent to jail for daring to ask for more than one bag. She then gave me a couple and immediately snatched the last one away (like it was gold dust) when I managed to fill up my other bags to breaking point.

What is going on in this country? Do they believe I am ruining the environment by asking for more than one bag? What did she expect me to do with my shopping, carry it all by hand?

Maybe the Government should concentrate on building nuclear power stations instead of coal stations and look into wasted carbon/energy instead - it may achieve something.

Yeh it's stupid, some places even charge 5p per bag. I hate the way it's PC to reuse bags, and the supermarkets love it, but they probably waste so much food because it goes out of date, and over package stuff, and generally don't really care. But don't worry, we're telling our customers to ration plastic bags.

i know that Sainsbury's no longer have there "free" bags on display , but all you have to do is ask and they will give you some ... & to be even more sad there is even a txt message service to remind you to bring in your "long life bags"

Plastic bags take thousands and thousands of years to degrade, so in reality they are your bags for life.

Sainsbury's have removed them from their tills due to a few complaints.

I know because I have had to deal with these complaints.

Bloody Eco-Know-It-Alls

Yes, it's completely stupid to ask people to cut down on waste? What really bugs me is people who want a plastic bag when they're buying one item! Now that is just plain lazy!

of course if we all pay for plastic bags it will reverse the damage done to our atmosphere

Hilarious how supermarkets ask people to re-use bags telling the media they care about the environment, while they waste tons of packaging with about 10 plastic wrappers on every product, such hypocrites.

It's hilarious how many people manage to pull a bag out from somewhere when you tell them you charge 5p for a bag where I work :p

I've always reused plastic bags, but they aren't exactly made to high standards and tear so you have to get new ones. Just another way for the supermarkets to make money I suppose. It's not exactly as if you can't recycle plastic bags, so the whole "omg they take thousands of years to degrade" argument is mute.

I've got a drawer full of plastic carrier bags because I never go out with any when I go shopping, I use them for bin bags though.

Supermarkets dont give a crap about the environment.
Customers using less bags....
1. Gives the company a 'greener' image
2. The supermarket dont have to spend as much on carrier bags

The funny thing is (Student job at tesco) when I was on a till someone was whining about a green point for reusing a bag yet she had come down in a sports model range rover. The reusing of a bag doesnt do much when you have a 200m trip to the supermarket in a supercharged v8.

EDIT: I think all this safe the planet stuff is complete BS, because china pumps out so much crap (not giving a damn on emmisions) that what we do makes absolutely no difference.
We all live in the same 'greenhouse' together.
Anyone ever seen shanghai?:p

I sense much of the "if the supermarkets don't use less packaging then why should I" attitude here :p

I used to get annoyed with plastic bags, love the bags for life, can fit more stuff in them, they rarely (if ever) break and I feel good for not having much rubbish at the end of it.

Incase you can't tell, we pretty much recycle everything possible in our house :p

What did you do with the several bags your local supermarket gave you the last time you shopped there? Not starting an argument, just curious.
