Hello, I have the following computer

MSI P4N Diamond SLI Nforce 4
Nvidia 7800 GTX
2GB Geil DDR2
Pentium 4 550(J)64bit
Seagate 250GB HD SATA
Seasonic 600w

I would like one of the newer cpu' out there but to do that I would need to upgrade my mobo as I'm sure the chipset will be a bit old..

When buying my computer years ago I was quite clueless and bought an Intel system. I thought that would be great for gaming, how wrong was I :D. Anyway, the tides have turned and now I hear Intel is on top.

So that’s why I'm on the lookout to upgrade my CPU and Mobo (I'm not sure If I will need to upgrade any of my other system, RAM maybe?) as my GPU is certainly being bottlenecked by the CPU.

Can anyone help me to choose what to buy? As I haven’t been into building pc's for a while now, so I'm a bit rusty. Ideally I would like to spend around £200ish.

Thanks for reading :).

Just looked at that site and found:

Wolfdale E7200 (2.53GHz, M0, 65W) 1066 9.5 NO

Basically my bored doesnt support them :(. Thats why I was led to belive I would have to upgrade my board to get a decent CPU.

I would be happy just to upgrade my board and CPU. As the only game I play is Counter Strike: Source. And I belive the GTX along with a decent cpu would be more than enough power :)

Im confused as I just looked at the cpu support list you linked and im sure the way I read it about the fastest cpu his motherboard supports is a pentium D840.

So am i. I must learn to read the right hand side. :o Why can't they just list the cpu's it does support like other manufacturers?

In that case you need a board as well as a new cpu. The Asus P5Q range are very good boards and so are the Asus P43 boards although they don't sell them here for some reason. A E8000 series cpu would be good to go with that. I would still look at upgrading the graphics card at some point as the 7800 series is hopelessly outclassed now.
