Have supermarkets gone mad?

I've noticed in our local Tesco - that has bags hidden away - they are VERY quick to try and sell you a 10p bag.... but reluctant to give you a free one....

I'm going to write a letter of complaint. Well, it's on my list.... number 5000 or so.

We went shopping at our local coop at the weekend, after getting home we noticed the plastic bag had a message on it that read something like

'This bag will start to degrade from the minute you start to use it, it will be completely bio-degraded within 3 years'

Why cant all supermarkets use these bags?

Rich

Because they are about as strong as Stevie Wonder's eyesight. When I was last in ASDAs they gave me these, two of them had caved in before I even got to the car. Most of the others burst as I was lifting them into the house.

If they could somehow make them stronger then it would solve the problem in my opinion. But I'm willing to bet they'd still profiteer from it.

I was in the bakers in town today buying a few steak and kidney pies, which I wasn't planning on trooping round with me in their individual bags, so when the woman behind the counter asked if I'd like a carrier bag for them I duly accepted, only for ONE PENCE to be demanded of me. One ******* pence! Jesus wept!

What on earth is that one pence for? Is one pence going to change anything at all? Is one pence going to put put people off buying bags anyway? No. Is the money raised from this scheme going to save the world from the evil plastic bags? Is it ******.

Plain and sheer profiteering. They should wear masks and striped jumpers the lot of them.

One pence could change quite a lot of things. You bought two pies which probably means, nationwide, millions of pies. The retailer will either choose to give it you back as a cost reduction (on cr@p like this, when you'll pay the going rate? hardly!) or maintain their cost.

What would you do?

Here in France the supermarkets don't have plastic bags, you have to bring your own. It's great - the number of plastic bags which would otherwise be wasted is rather high. Maybe you have to see how much plastic you waste in supermarket bags to realise....my house has probably saved a room's worth of plastic over the past year by using recyclable cloth bags.

Plus, in any case, plastic bags are rubbish. You can pile as much as you like into the ones we have, about as much as you can carry, and they just won't break.

Redundancies? What redundancies?

Do you think plastic bags are made by a little family business in the Cotswolds, or something?

No plastic bags being made means businesses that make or sell them going bust. Not exactly hard to see. Plastic bags are a huge industry.

That has to be one of the worst excuses for not being 'environmentally conscious' (sorry, annoying buzzword) I've heard in a while.

Can anyone argue against using less resources?

If you take the environmental aspect out of this, that's what it comes down to; and I fail to see how using less can be bad.

No it isn't actually. I take care of myself and try and make sure to be as eco friendly as possible and this has not been taught to me by any source. Just that I care about the planet I live on. To the others that can't get that into their head then I would say the government and educational boards could have spent a little more time teaching people the right way and what could happen if we are wasteful. Look around you today!.

What do you mean if you take the environmental aspect out of it?. This is what it's about lol. When did I say that it's bad to use less also?.

I mentioned that her "attitude" was in need of checking.

What would or could the Manager have done about the Corporate Policy of his Organisation? Nothing. This is not store specific.

The "idiot" is actually following company procedure. Not his choice.

Oh so you're a doormat then?. Read the OP and then comment again. She could have politely mentioned it. Not treat someone like they have committed a crime. If you are willing to let people treat you like that then fine, just don't expect others to let people treat them like that ;). I certainly wouldn't.

Heh I bet the vans for home deliveries manage about 5 mpg as well.

Actually they are a lot more economical than everyone coming to the store.

Think about it, if a delivery driver goes on their route they only have to visit the store again when they've run out of deliveries, whereas customers driving in will each travel twice the distance from their house to the shop.

It's a clever idea, I just begrudge paying a fiver for delivery.

I hate the people behind the till who give you 1 bag at a ******* time.... whats with that??? its not like they are loosing out, they know you are going to need more than one bag for that £70 of shopping for ***** sake.

And on a side note.... Why not make bags free for every one, so when i decide out of the blue to pop into the supermarket on the way home i dont have to think" ah **** i dont have a bag* and for all those eco warriors who happen to have hippie bags stuffed to the crust with plastic bags take there used bags to a recycling point in the supermarket?

This way if i remember to stuff my pockets with bags i can reuse them or recycle them.

Bah... its late n i am grumpy

I read the OP and commented on it several times. Might want to read the thread yourself :)

Did you have a point?

EDIT: I think all this safe the planet stuff is complete BS, because china pumps out so much crap (not giving a damn on emmisions) that what we do makes absolutely no difference.
We all live in the same 'greenhouse' together.
Anyone ever seen shanghai?:p

I'm sorry but, are you intentionally being dense? China pumps out more crap than us, because THEY MAKE ALL OUR STUFF. If they stopped making it to drop emissions massively, we'd simply have to take over manufacturing and the crap being pumped out is exactly the same amount.

Governments are quite happy to blame china while their countries live using the goods they produce. ITs exactly the same complete BS save the planet clap trap as the bags, pretend its the problem when its not. They are just blaming someone else, and you're blaming someone else by blaming China.

Yet you fail miserably at understanding that people cannot treat you like that. If an employee of a hotel done that to a guest then he/she would be in serious trouble. Just like any job, you have to give respect to the customer. Do you understand now?.

She then gave me a look of disgust and complete contempt. Here I was being tried and sentenced, and sent to jail for daring to ask for more than one bag. She then gave me a couple and immediately snatched the last one away (like it was gold dust) when I managed to fill up my other bags to breaking point.

Hopefully now after reading part of the OP and understanding it this time you will see what I mean. Would you allow someone to treat you this way?. This is why I asked if you were a doormat ;).
