Am I the only one who genuinely doesn't get what all the fuss is about?

I've seen people post that they will only get the PC version of Fallout 3 if it has achievements enabled on Windows Live! for example, otherwise they will be going for the 360 version.

Honestly, what is the big deal?

ePenis.
Simple as that. I gave up on them after 2 things that higlighted to me how pointless they were.

A freind playing Test Drive Unlimited driving "every road" to get some gamer points (ingoring freinds inviting him to races and other fun things in the game), then bemoaning the fact that people wouldn't gift him some wins to get his multiplayer points and complaining how boring it was finding every road.

Another freind refussing to play COD4 online casue "theres no point I dont get any gamerscore out of it".

Some of them do add odd ball goals that you wouldnt normaly hunt for, akin to the old do the first level without losing a life goals in old school games but some of them suck the life out of games and turn people into boring points whores.

I quite liked the test drive acheivment where you had to go along every road, although I wasn't doing that when playing online with friends though.

Achievements are a great idea and can add longevity to a title.

Sadly, there are certain individuals (as above) to whom achievements are the be all and end all, rather than a bonus.

I didnt care about achievements having a ps3, but since i got the Burnout Paradise patch i was kinda addicted to getting all the trophys...Then i traded in my PS3 for beer money

I live for achievements. Achievements even make rubbish games fun. Saying that I'll still play great games if they don't have achievements. That's why I'm playing through Deus Ex again. To me it's one of my all time favourite games.

I enjoy them if they are there, though wouldn't buy a game because of it. If one looks interesting, then I'll try and get it. First time through I'll ignore them, just play to learn how the game goes, and get the story done. Then I'll look at the achievements and go for them.
This is good because in many cases it gives you a different angle to look at the game, force you to play in a different way to normal. Some of the ones in Sins are things like 'build more than x drones', 'win without capitol ships', 'win without frigates' and so on. They add an extra level of challenge to help lengthen the game, but they are purely optional.

I can understand bits and bobs about them but mostly see them as sad and pointless.
I saw that on hl2ep2 you could get one for putting the gnome(from literally 5minutes intot he game) into the rocket and send it to space, annoying since id taken the gnome all the way to the bit where alyx gets healed(but i lost it somewhere in a mad fight with that bloomin big ant lion) right before the rocket.....
Theres the odd one on cod4 that is a laugh to try for too, but to be honest.. theres that many sad ones where people purposefully go and get mates on a server to just go and do the achivements.
Someone was talking about going on dodS the other day just to get the achievements.. I dont really see the fun side in that =/ Its good if they do infact force you to play in a different way, getting a new experience out a game, but its quite sad when people go about it like its some sort of task that should be accomplished.

Some people enjoy the challenge of getting every single thing the developer challenges you to get from the game. Whether some are more boring than others isn't necessarily the point, the developer lays down the gauntlet for people to take on.

It's up to some people whether they do it or not.

The worst thing about Achievement points is that it's brought out the people who condemn those who enjoy the challenge of getting them. Those who claim it's 'ePenis' etc... Ironically, many of these people love ranking up in Battlefield games or levelling up in games like World of Warcraft.

They're fun and challanging to gain.

Not really, you just build them up as you go through a game. Tutorial Completed - 5 points. Just ruins the immersion. Finding the hidden stuff in a game can be fun, but when you find something, you know you've found it, you don't need to be told. Unless you crave approval or something.

I like the achievements in TF2,

If you get a certain number for 1 character you unlock a new weapon for them, and the more achievements you get the more you unlock,

Thats because TF2 rocks!

I do like the Valve Achievements the gnome one was actually quite fun, queue a little cheer when the rocket launched.
only do them in any game for fun, I'm no point whore.
Some games have absurd challenges (Smile in Geowars Evo²) and some which seemingly you can only achieve by getting mates to help.

It depends on the way in which achievements are implemented tbh, my current favorite for Trophies (the PS3 equivalent) is Wipeout HD, this doesn't have silly grinding achievements like many games, it asks you to push yourself or do something different. For example one is to get to zone 50 in zone mode, a mode where the game gets faster with each zone you complete, this is a challenge in itself, but the trophy not only asks you to reach zone 50 but do it only using air brakes, no steering. It also asks you to figure out a way to do a barrel roll on a track that is virtually flat (when i managed that it was an awesome experience, you end up flying over the entire track if you get it right) or even encourages online play. Online achievements include things like completing a 12 race tournament online, it doesn't matter where you're placed, just that you don't drop out, even if you're losing; an achievement like that to me really improves the online experience as it drastically reduces quitters.
