Is it me, or do NME write some seriously rubbish reviews?

Fair enough, I haven't read many so they might not all be like that, but the ones I have read are really short and don't really seem to critique the album at all, but call the band expletive names..

I'd link to some but they're usually full of swearies.

Rubbish.

they write total crap. was an article in latest one where they "unveil" this guy whos been producing music under an alias.... would be ok if it wasnt for that they got it completley wrong and it isnt them at all

I agree NME reviews are generally rubbish. Though imo they have gotten worse over time. You still do get some good reviews but these are rare.

Best example was the MGMT - Kids review, called the track amazing and then scored it 6/10 based on the kind of people that were listening to it.

I thought only preppy/indie kids read NME, and they only read it because all their friends were and so it was cool :p

Mind you, kerrang aren't so different these days either.

Kerrang has always been ****
Especially their music channel, where it's either Linkin Park or Metallica day, every day.

tbh Kerrang used to be alright when it was a proper metal mag (in the 80's). But NME has always been up its own arse end, same with those that read it. (no offence)

I don't read it. I was looking on Wikipedia at new albums that have been released and NME's reviews seem to always rate them the lowest (from what I've seen)

Keane's new album for example, most have voted it 4/5, whilst NME has voted it 2/10. :/

Didn't they give it 2/10 because Keane are still churning out carbon copies of the same rubbish time and time again? Given that you still have a quote from Travis' 1999 album in your signature, maybe your taste in music needs to evolve too.

NME is rubbish and seems to dish out praise to any new band which is remotely obscure. They don't seem to realise obscure is mostly badly written ****. I used to read Kerrang but they went downhill quick and I used to watch MTV2 but ever since Zane Lowe started it just seems to talk rubbish too. They even get some woman from NME to do reviews sometimes!

Their new album, I'd say, is fairly different from their last two.

My taste in music is always evolving, but thanks for the advice.
I regularly listen to new music, but at the same time, I like to listen to older stuff, hence why I sometimes have quotes from old songs in my sig.

Are women not as capable at reviewing music, as men?

It's because NME think keane aren't cool anymore, their reviews have nothing to do with musical ability and listenability :p

Keane used to be cool???

When in Blazes did this happen? Ah well, lets hope the pudgy one doesn't go on a massive sherbert binge again!

It's a shame that NME has so much influence over the independent music industry. It's tabloid journalism at its worst.

I think the most ironic thing about the whole operation is that when it was newspaper based it was more current, honest, insightful along with being a good read. They had a monopoly on the entire UK music review scene.
Melody maker chipped away at them for a while then NME went magazine/internet based and managed to destroy quite a few years worth of reputation almost overnight.
