USB 1 to USB 2

i know you can get cards that go inside pc's but can you get external hubs that will plug into an old pc with USB 1 and then output USB 2?

You can connect a USB 2 hub but it will only run at USB1 speeds as you link between you PC and the hub is the USB1 port that you are plugged into. The only way to change is to do as you say and put a usb2 pci card in your pc

thought that would be the case, was hoping to keep it all external as no internal bays on this is old computer

But you'll still need a pci slot to make the connection with the mobo (assuming the mobo doesn't have any USB2 headers as OP said it was old)

Thats true, but even a PC bought in 1996 I used had three of them...

It had 3 USB 2 headers? I didn't think USB 2 was around then.

3 PCI slots.

It had 2 usb ports.
