Hi Folks,

Was looking for new cars recently, but decided that I cant really find anything interesting that I can afford, so put it on the back burner; and decided to stick with my P reg 405 for a bit, 142k but still pretty sound. Now I've just spotted a Mondeo with a for sale sign in the window outside work.

104k, 53 Plate.
1.8l Zetec, Aircon, Cruise etc.
They're asking £2495, but have stated they're flexible.

Is this a lot of miles for a Mondeo? I've not really had any experience of petrol engines before, I know a good diesel will go way past 100k, but is this one a little long in the tooth? It looks fairly tidy, haven't got the owner down to have a proper look yet though, if I do, what do I need to look at?

I love this forum

OMG ITS TOO EXPENSIVE I"D WANT TO PAY...

... a whole 200 quid less.
It's still 8% less than asking, whcih isn't exactly a small percentage, could pay for a service/tyre/brakes etc.

Well I had a proper look round, and took it for a brief spin last night; I kinda like it :)

Any suggestions for things I might have overlooked before I make the man an offer?

Check the AC works as this can be quite expensive to put right. Other than that check everything electrical although I'm sure it will all be fine.

AC does work, but it isn't very cold; I am guessing it just needs re-gassing at £50odd?

The other electrics seem ok though

Sounds like a top-up rather than a leak/damaged condenser. Might as well ask the garage to do it for you (for free) if you buy the car.

How did the clutch feel on your test drive? If driven well they can pretty much last forever on a Mondeo but it is always worth checking.

What was the service history like?

I am buying privately, so no garage involved.

Clutch seemed ok, but it was replaced at ~80k.

I haven't seen the full history yet; will make sure I do before agreeing to anything.

Thanks for the advice so far :)

How many months tax and MOT does it come with? What are the tyres like?
When did it have its last service?

It's always a good idea to try and find as much wrong with the car as possible so you can use it to your advantage when haggling over the price.
