When installing a new motherboard....

...is it likely to have any problems using the current installation of windows? Would you need to do a reformat and windows reinstall for any reason or just using the present installation is no problem?

It can cause bother, whenever I have changed mainboard I have had to reinstall. Vistas product id is also directly tied to the motherboard (for OEM at least).

If your running OEM XP or Vista and change your board you will require a new license as the license is tied to the board it was originaly activated on.

Personaly I would do a fresh install as there wont be any problems regards drivers ect.

As you are replacing a faulty motherboard you will have to call microsoft to reactivate Vista\windows XP. If it is not a faulty motherboard you are replacing and only being an upgrade then you cannot get windows XP/Vista reactivated.

as far as microsoft are concerned, you fried your motherboard going ott with overclocking

bought a new one, and need the key re-activating.
as a rule i always re-install whenever i upgrade any main component(cpu/mobo/ram)

don't give out false info!

personally i've formatted with every motherboard upgrade, besides moving from a A7V266 to an A7V266R, since they even looked exactly the same

The license live's and dies with the board, only time that would work if the op RMA'D the board and got a different one back.
Under the EULA he wont be legally licensed.

Read the first line I mentioned oem.

I tried to run an old install on a new mboard.
all that happened was a lot of bsod.

Hi, if when you change the motherboard and it involves a change of chipset, ie NV to Intel, then a repair install will put in the drivers you need if you want to keep your progrmas and data. If you are going from an Intel chipset, ICH8 to ICH9 for example, then there will be no need to re-install or repair windows.
Of course the licencing rules will apply...
