Is it just me or is it just people of a elder age that basically take no notice of the advice you give them?

For example i've got a guy over email moaning that when there using Internet explorer it keeps crashing. They've looked on the microsoft website for answers and even updated to IE7 and still no luck.

So I tell them to switch to firefox Or Opera as both are as good or better than IE7. So they install firefox and tell me everything's working fine in firefox BUT they really really want IE6 working  can I help?

feel like banging my head against the wall.

Had a similar one last week i've setup a forum for this guy, he's only got a small bit of webspace so I left the forum defaults to only allow 3-4 picture attachments (as this uploads the users photos to his server therefore taking space) I told him what people usually do is use a free picture upload site get the url link and past that into the posts using the image tag, this way he can add as many pictures as he wants without using the server space.

Sent a long email explaining all this and every time I get the response "Can you increase the forum to allow us to add 20+ images? at any size" I sent emails back and forth and he replied "how about 19 images" , "How about 18?" in the end i wasn't getting through so i just altered the settings and and waiting for his next email about running out of space.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

tell the first ones to install adblock plus, and use the Easylist subscription.

then show them a few sites with and without it on. stops all crap

then slap them :p

You can use Firefox 3 with IE as switch over - you need to download Firefox add-on and tpye the search box "IE TAB" and then you can use switch either Fx3 or IE6/7 with Fx 3 running as web browser -- it work prefect for me.

IE 6 is very old and has lots of holes so no need to use - use Fx 3 or IE7 or new Opera 9.6 -- but Fx 3 is the best browser that make you much easier to use - i never use IE.

Yes, I get this a lot! People Do not listen, they take it upon their own hands to do what they want. When it breaks I charge them more for the priveledge [sideline job]. When I am at work I don't fix it straight away I wait until I want to do it. People really annoy me because in the IT world they think it can be fixed NOW. As in stop what your doing drop everything and come help me.

I hate it when they don't listen to what you tell them. ALL users of IT treat technicians as if they no EVERYTHING including fixing TV's, DVD players e.t.c. If the users treat me as a technician with no respect I don't give normal users respect. Simple world of IT.

haha had this also, had the guy at the end of the street come round with a 10 year old POS (no not piece of ****) point of sale systemexpecting me to fix it

I did have a guy (yard worker) call me up last week saying that their PC kept shutting itself off so they couldn't see if they had any emails.

I tried so hard to explain that it was the screen saver.....

Nope - not just you. My father in law asked for advice on how to change ISP from Tiscali to Sky. My reply was call Tiscali (foreign call centre ) and request a MAC code. I repeatedly said dont use the word "cancel".

Phone conversation went like "Hi there can I have a MAC code to cancel please?"

Bang went his net connection when the muppet on the other end of the line switched it off

Now thats a classic :p

you could always suggest ways of fixing the problem, instead of dodging it by installing a totally unecessary program ;)

Glad im not the only one who thought this ;)

An IT Pro would fix it, and let the customer have and use what they wanted.
I for one use ie7. I dont like firefox or opera.

As for the forum, thats just the user being plain stupid lol.

hehe dearey me
You read the "email funny" about the women that supposedly phoned support and got told to pack the machine back into the box and take it back to the shop? I like that one

I'm with you on IE7 too. I tried Firefox (for about 6 months) and swapped back to IE (IE6 at the time) in the end. I missed the tabbed browsing and that was it. Of course, as soon as they introduced it into IE7 it became my perfect browser.

I've dabbled with Opera, and Safari. Didn't like either of them either :D

I just don't see the point in installing additional software to do the same job as IE. A job which IE does very, very well.

Agreed

Lets not run away with ourselves. IE for free (i say free its more forcibly bundled) software does indeed work alright.

Opera and Firefox (and Chrome nowdays!) just go many more steps better and above the call of duty.

Many people just need a simple browser that doesn't really do anything but show webpages. Thats fine for them, on the other hand power users (like the vast majority of people on this forum) realise they can get more out of their web experience by using something better tailored to the job :)

The guy is not dumb, he should not need to use FF or any other crap.

IE (he should be on 7 not 6) should not crash so obv there is an issue the OP should help him fix instead of throwing another App at it.

There was a Tool for XP called IEFIX (I think), it could fix most issues.
