Looking for a new headset and a sound card (first time user).

Will mainly be used for gaming - shooters in general. I need a mic on the headset too, or a detachable one.

Recommendations much appreciated!

Let's just put it this way, headsets are crap compared to normal headphones.

If I had to order one of those now then I would go for the goldring headphones in every possible parallel universe that I was in. It is no contest, and you do realise that most these headset manufacturers started out in the business as mouse mat makers, mouse and keyboard manufacturers etc. They don't have anywhere near the same experience and design skills of real headphone manufacturers.

I use headphones with a clip on mic, and I can recommend the speedlink elara mic which you can pick up cheap as chips on a well known internet auction site. I paid 4 quid inc delivery I believe and it works perfectly :)

Ps proper headphones are way better than headsets, and ive tried a few :)

Good sound quality through VOIP? (Ventrilo/TS etc) ?

Yep apparently its very clear on vent. I havent tried ts or anything else as vent is all i use.. I was quite suprised considering how cheap it is. That said I read a few threads before with people recommending it, and i add my name to that list now :)

sorry for not elaborating more, was just waiting for steam to open when i checked the forums for a sec..

basically all 'gaming' headphones are crap

getting 'proper' ones are a much better idea, the Goldring headsets were added to ocuk due to popular demand. couldn't remember the name of the mic, Hutch said it though, personally i just play casually so don't bother with voice comms (plus my gf would disown me i reckon..) :p

goldring 100 or 150 with that soundcard will be awesome

No problem.

Probably going for the 100 with the soundcard :) Will place order soon, many thanks for the help.

Uh oh, might have a problem. The specs on the site say that it is a PCI-E sound card, however my motherboard (Abit IP35) only has 1 pci-e slot, which is taken up by my graphics card.

Problem?

Ok, thanks for letting me know that, will probably go for headphones instead then.

At the moment it looks something like this :

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SC-002-AS

But I'm not sure whether I should go for a clip on mic instead?

This is exactly what I've got, a brilliant setup. Those headphones with the xonar are excellent, probably the best you can get in your budget. What motherboard is it you have? It'll probably have a PCI-E X16 slot and a PCI-E slot, the X16 being the one where you graphics card will be. If you give the model of motherboard you have we can work out if it'll work.

Thanks for he input :)

I have an Abit IP35 "Dark Raider".

Mobo manual tells me I have : 1 x PCI-E x16
2 x PCI-E x1
3 x PCI

So should be alright, I think.

My housemates at uni even joined in and wanted to play some css. People in game got confused (and probabyl started fapping) when a girl came on my mic and started screaming....... GO GARAGE YOU NOOBS. OMG W.T.F BBQ :D

Why even bother with a soundcard when you can just get a USB headset which works without one? (asuming you are always going to use the headset and not speakers here)

Would you care to suggest a USB headset that will sound as good as the Xonar / DR100 combo?

It's about quality. I could buy a £5 headset, USB or not, and it would 'work'.
