Heading to the job centre today as I need a j-o-b.

Just wondering what to expect?...Do you usually need an appointment or something?

What actually happens there?

The reason I ask is because it's a 1 hour journey each way...and I don't want it to be a waste of time.

Call them and ask them to send you the forms to fill in
and at the same time make a appointment.

I last went to a job centre about 6 years ago, so they may have changed since then, but I didn't need an appointment. Just go up to someone and ask for a chat, they're generally very helpful.

Never found me a job though...

Probably not worth going down there if its a 1 hours journey...

The application are done over the phone now i believe, so if you're looking to start a claim you can get the number off their website.

You can also find all the jobs on the website.

If i were you I'd get on the site, look at all the jobs and get the number. Then give them a ring to start your application (normally takes about 40mins, so make sure you have plenty of time).

They'll then give you an appointment to go in and see someone, sign a few bits of paper, then you'll be expected to go in once every two weeks.

To just look on the job points you don't need an appointment, to talk with someone etc make a claim, look at your options you will. If you know you want to claim JSA then there will be an 0845 number for your area's contact centre to ring and make a claim over the phone.

Sorry for my ignorance but by application do you mean for the dole?...If so, I have no intention to go on the dole cause then I just wouldn't bother with finding a job...I want an actual job...are they useless for that then?

Truth be told, I don't know the name of the job centre - I'm not even sure its a job centre :/...struggling to find it on yell.com as well :/

I completely forgot about the website, now that DID get me a job

The Jobcentre is generally a waste of space tbh. Your much more likely to find a job in the back of the local paper tbh. Still worth a look down, but don't expect anything great. You can also access all the jobs online at;
http://www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk/JCP/Customers/Searchforajob/ijb.aspx
(Looks like its down at the moment though) But expect to get reults for chef jobs in Germany or Poland when you asked for IT jobs within 5 miles of your postcode.

Chavs, wasters and plenty of less than reputable characters at my old job centre.

Hopefully never going back there again...

Amen! Utterly useless people. I did some volunteering in a local school I used to work at to gain some experience. Told the idiots at my job office and they told me I'd lose money off my JSA for doing that. Then someone asked how I'd apply for jobs if I was working. What you mean the recruiting sites and email servers stop working after 5pm?!:rolleyes:

Then how about people contacting you? Well erm they could ring me on my mobile phone. You know a phone I can fit in my pocket and not need a 10 mile telephone extension line so I can take my home phone to work.

And what if you have an interview? Well perhaps I could just not go in to work as I'm VOLUNTEERING there!

Oh please don't get me started. I get asked every week if I look at their site. And every week I tell them this. I want jobs in MK so I put in MK and get jobs in Liverpool, Portsmouth and Glasgow. Good going. :D And every time I say that the idiot always tells me that perhaps the information isn't being put in right. Really!? What makes you say that then?

As you might guess I'm very angry with my local job office, never met such a bunch of idiots with such an amazing concentration before. Previously I'd need to find a mental institute to achieve this level of incompetence in such a small area of town.

Oh and I'm signing on tomorrow. Can't wait. :D

theres no point in going down at all unless you dont have internet or a phone

all the jobs on theyre job points are on the website

benefits etc can all be done over the phone.

not many employers like to employ via the jobcentre, dont bother with it.

Actually going to a jobcentre is pointless, you'll find all the advisers are too busy with people on JSA.
Im on it atm and iv been told by them that their website isnt really that much use(more so for me since im a graduate).
sector1.net
fish4.co.uk
monster.co.uk
britishjobs.net
manpower.co.uk
jobsunlimited.co.uk
totaljobs.co.uk

try those lot out, theyr all on some sheet they give me.
Not really found much handy for temp jobs as im claiming for 1more month until my job starts :)

Not had a problem with vacancies on their site, but generally during the average 1-2 hour search I find maybe 5 suitable vacancies within 10-12 miles of my postcode...

By the way, employers have got nothing to lose by advertising with JCP, it costs zero and there's usually several hundred thousand people looking through the listings each week.

There are little machines in there that list all the jobs, alternatively you can go and speak to the people and they can help find you a job. My mum works there :)

Yea its better to look online or on their website. Went in it my local one and the staff are the most miserable bunch of people i have met. You need one of those ticket things with a number on it to speak to someone, however when i went in there was no-one there. So i walked up to the person at the desk to ask about looking for jobs and she just pointed over my shoulder to the ticket machine. Went over, pressed the button and before the ticket came out my number was called. What the hell was the point?!

Wasteo timeo.

Too bad the advisors don't seem to be allowed or bothered to do things like "market" their clients to employers (a brief introduction on the phone would suffice); or even just point out any new store openings or similar events...
