Hi,

I am currently considering purchasing the below system however I was hoping people could give me some advice:

"Titan Accelerator" Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.40GHz @ 3.00GHz+ DDR2 System

1) Vista or Xp
I cannot decide whether to get Vista or XP Pro, I’ve heard many bad things about Vista and because I intend to play some older games (as well as newer) I would like to know what is the best to go with. Games I play at the moment are Battle for Middle Earth 2, Medieval Total War, Battlefield 2. I intend to buy Farcry 2 however.

If you can advise on which is best and the downfalls of Vista that would be great. I’m not the most technical minded person so any advise you can give on the system also would be appreciated.

2) Good choice of gaming system?
This is an offer for this week only – Is it a good offer? Would you recommend this?

Thanks guys

Hi and welcome to the forums I would go with Vista home Premium 64 bit with that PC Seems to be a good spec for the price, especially with the 666 offer.

Thanks Brian for your prompt reply. I was wondering what specifically I would lose if I was to go with Xp or Vista? I’ve heard Vista has some bad compatibility issues and some games don’t work with it (e.g. Jedi Knight series) – I’m just a few clicks away from ordering this system but I need convincing lol

Thanks again

Most of the claims that Vista does not work with certain games have now been resolved. Driver support is excellent and I would say that the consensus on this forum would be to go with Vista. You will be able to address 4GB of RAM with Vista 64 bit whereas with XP32 bit you will only be using about 3.25GB
I like the Aero theme and Vista's prefetch that speeds loading times up for applications. The indexing service is excellent and I don't think you will regret getting Vista

Thanks again Brian, I am taking your advice onboard but I want to quell my reservations about Vista. I've been told that Vista is a massive drain on resources, to the point that the power of the system is reduced because of Vista's resource hog...Is this just bad rep or is there evidence of this?

Sorry if i'm overly apprehensive, I want to ensure I make the right choice :)

That is really FUD Dragon. Vista does like RAM but you are getting 4GB which is the sweet spot ATM.
As for a drain on resources then i can only assume that you are referring to the fact that Vista uses the RAM and does not leave 3GB of your 4GB lying about doing nothing. Once you open an application that needs RAM Vista immediately releases it and there is no slowdown in performance. Here is link that might help with your concerns about apps working. Here is another link to a Vista v XP thread.

Thanks Brian, I've decided to make a decision so I ordered the system with the Vista you recommended. If I debated this with myself any longer i'd end up buying nothing lol

Cheers mate

At DragonUK20002 could you please post back how you got on with the new system and if Vista was the right way to go for you :cool:

In the end I went with Vista 64bit - So far *touch wood* I have had no major problems and the system is running great in which i'm very pleased with.

I've had a few very minor issues in regards to compatibility with older programs (specifically Adobe Photoshop CS & a modding tool for an older game called ModView which uses the Quake 3 engine I believe). Also had a minor issue with WoW where some minor lag was occuring but I found an easy solution which just required me to lower the number of sound channels which is not really a big deal.

Overall i'm pleased, I just hope I don't run into any major issues in future

@Brian - Haha, don't worry mate I wouldn't blame you if things went wrong...although I will admit it was largely 50/50 in the Xp Vs Vista debate.

@Craigius - I think Vista was a good choice so far, i'm slightly disappointed Adobe Photoshop doesn't work but I am going to see if there are any solutions to get around it.

Good all around though :D

Glad to hear that everything went well and that you are pleased. Now overclock the **** out of it:D (The author of this post takes no responsibility for any burning smells that may occur)
